SHIRLEY GERALDINE MAURICE
Peacefully, at the age of 92 at the Convalescent Home in Winnipeg, Shirley left her loving children, Karen Lynn and Ronald Jamie and Jamie’s wife Renée; grandchildren, Bryce, Cooper, Ryan, and their partners and families; great-grandchildren, Molly and Max; brother Gary Solar, and his children Kelly, Tracy, Kris, and Kaarina, and their partners and families.
Predeceased by her mother, Mary Solar; and her husband, Gerry; sisters-in-law, Lucille, Yvonne, Flora, and Janette; brothers-in-law, Louis, Edward, Lawrence, Roland, Dollard, and Emil.
She is survived by sisters-in-law, Anne, Elvy, Clémence, Cécile and Pierrette, and brother-in-law Louis.
Shirley’s Mom was a teacher, and under her watchful eye and years of experience, Shirley left Grade 11 at Isaac Newton High School in June of 1949 and began her teaching career in September of that year in Fryer School in Silver, Manitoba, just down the eight mile road from Rembrandt School, where her Mother taught and lived. Shirley’s first class was made up of 24 students from Grade 1 to 9, and the kids were great!
From 1950 to 1951 Shirley attended Provincial Normal School (what would have been a Teachers College) in Tuxedo, in Winnipeg. It was a wonderful year of making friendships that continued throughout her life.
Her 34-year teaching career continued after marriage and two children, in Ontario, and Manitoba. She taught at Allard Elementary School in St. James, and later at Ryerson Elementary School in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg until retirement in 1990.
Gerry and Shirley enjoyed an active and fulfilling retirement which included volunteering at Mary Mother of the Church in Fort Richmond, with the Foodbank, and spending time with the grandchildren, as well as golfing and curling. After Gerry’s passing, Shirley enjoyed curling, golf, friends and actively participating in the faith-life at Mary Mother of the Church.
In Shirley’s memory, she asks that you send flowers to someone you love, hug the children and adults in your lives, be kind to animals, and remember the ‘fun times’ we enjoyed together.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (opposite the Winnipeg Mint) at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, with coffee and pastries to follow. Interment with her husband Gerry will follow in the Garden of Memories.
Special thanks from the Family to the Convalescent Home staff for their help and care during this difficult time.

My sister Emily and I would have liked to attend Shirley's service on Tuesday. However my husband, John and I, Adeline, will be away for a few days. We send our sincere condolences to Karen, Ronald, and brother Gary and their families. I have some of Mom's (Jean Pistun) photos of Mary Solar and Shirley and Gary from the 1940's and 1950's, even Shirley and Gerry's wedding photo. I was wondering if Shirley's family or Gary's would be interested in these photos. Mom and Mrs. Solar were very good friends a long time ago. Glen Eden should have my phone number. - Posted by: Edward (John) and Adeline Natyna (Pistun) (friend of the family, especially Mary Solar and family) on: Aug 03, 2024

Shirley was my co-operating teacher in 1988. I still remember her encouraging me to sing with the students when I was a nervous first year student. Thirty plus years later I still enjoy singing with my students! Condolences to all of her family and friends. Remember her well. - Posted by: Rhonda Morden (Student Teacher) on: Jul 27, 2024
