HUGH DONALD SUTHERLAND


It is with appreciation for a life well lived, that the family of Donald Sutherland announce his peaceful passing on July 30, 2024, at Seven Oaks Hospital, Winnipeg at age 94, with his beloved wife Alesa Sutherland at his side.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Annie Sutherland, brothers, Malcom, Alex and Murray, sister Anne and wives, Evelyn (nee McIntyre), m 1954-1980, Colette (nee Ostertag), m 1981-2001. Left to mourn are his wife of 22 years Alesa (nee Dyck), children, Glenn Sutherland (Joan), Kimberly Sutherland, Laurie Holmes (James), stepchildren, Leigh, Jaret and Kelly Verreault, grandchildren, Naim and Marie Sutherland, great-nephew Mateo Harris, and his sister Catherine Rodin. Left to mourn as well are cousins, nieces, nephews, close friends, colleagues and many others whose lives were touched by his genuine interest, care and concern for them and their lives.

Donald was born December 22, 1929, on the family farm at Richlea, SK. His deep connection to and reverence for the land was a thread throughout his lifetime. He firmly believed in the value of education, taking ongoing training and certifications well into his 80s. He completed a BSA, a B.Ed and MBA as well as numerous professional certifications in his lifetime. He treasured his relationships with his fellow classmates from the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture throughout his life.

For over 25 years Donald enjoyed a rich and varied professional life, including working for Federated Co-op, the Economic Council of Canada, Manpower and Immigration as well as the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association. In 1981, he returned to his roots and farmed the land of his birth.

Donald valued love and rejoiced in having a rich family life. He counted himself very blessed with each of his wives. He was a dedicated father to his children, grandpa to his grandchildren and great-nephew, encouraging them to be the best they could be. He strove to inspire all in his orbit to reach higher and strive for fulfillment, up to his final years with Alesa, which were spent counselling and mentoring couples and families towards richer relationships.

Donald will be remembered for his intense curiosity, his love of learning, his playfulness, his easy laugh and his unfailing belief that each person had great potential, regardless of their origin, mistakes and challenges.

A service in joyful remembrance of his life will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Parish of St. Timothy at 11:00 a.m. located at 135 John Forsyth Road. Interment at Eston Cemetery to follow at a later date.
