BRIAN Moffatt

1947 – 2024

The family of Brian Moffatt is saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Clear Lake, one of his favourite places to be.

Brian was born on August 21, 1947, in Souris, Manitoba and was raised on the farm in Carroll, Manitoba with his two brothers and sister. He attended elementary school in Carroll before completing high school in Souris. Upon graduation he began employment as an Assessment Valuator for the Province of Manitoba. He spent three years at the Souris office and the remainder of his thirty-seven year career at the Brandon office.

He was a talented athlete. He played center field for the Souris Cardinals and Brandon Cloverleafs ball clubs for many years. He excelled at curling and was known for having a long slide, almost arriving in the house at the far end at the same time as the rock he threw. He participated in Provincial Playdowns numerous times and was a member of the Brandon Curling Club for over thirty-five years. He was also an avid golfer and upon retirement became a member of the Shilo Golf Club where he enjoyed playing three times a week. In 2013 he achieved every golfer's dream and got a Hole-In-One.

In 1970 he met Catherine Craig at Danceland in Clear Lake, and they were married shortly after. He was extremely proud of his two children, Erin and Craig. He spent countless hours in the backyard teaching them how to throw, catch and hit a ball. During winter months he showed them how to sweep, slide and throw a curling rock. He coached both in their respective sports for many years and spent many hours at their games and tournaments.

Brian was an involved community member in the sports world. He volunteered for many sporting events held in Brandon, including two World Youth Baseball Championships, the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1993 and 2012 and the World Curling Championship in 1995. When his own curling days were over, he used his knowledge of the game to coach many junior and ladies' curling teams.

When not playing, volunteering for or coaching sports, Brian was an avid gardener and took immense pride in his manicured lawn, flower beds and vegetable garden. He was proud that his hard work paid off when his yard achieved a 1st, 2nd and 3rd award for Best Home Grounds in the Province. He especially enjoyed being outside in the yard feeding the birds and squirrels and playing with his "bud" Chili for over seventeen years. He loved to sit outside under the heater every night, even if it was so cold his drink froze before he could finish it.

Brian leaves behind his wife of fifty-four years Catherine; daughter Erin (Darren Lee) of Salt Spring Island, BC; son Craig (Caroline) of St. Catharine's, ON; grandchildren Elizabeth, Brianne, Brandon, Brodie, and Hazel; sister Linda Chapple of Portage La Prairie, MB; brother Keith of Brandon, MB; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Rob and Joy Moffatt, his brother Barry, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Stuart and Shirley Craig.

A private family service was held on August 17, 2024, followed by a reception at the Victoria Inn.

In lieu of flowers donations in Brian's memory may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
