EMILY MARKIW
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Emily Markiw (nee Tyralová) at the age of 81 years, on September 8, 2024, at St. Boniface General Hospital.
Emily was born in the city of Medzilaborce, in what is now the Slovak Republic. She was predeceased by her husband Bohdan (Bob) Markiw and her two brothers, Milan and Ján Tyrala. In the Slovak Republic she leaves to mourn her sisters-in-law, Jenovefa (Milan) and Alena (Ján) Tyralová and in the United Kingdon her niece Alena Abrahámová (and her sons, Zdenko and Milan). Emily will be fondly remembered by her adopted family here in Winnipeg, Gerald and Jana Stelmack (nee Barak), Tomas Barak and her goddaughters, Sarah and Laura Stelmack.
Emily received her education and training as a teacher and taught in the Slovak Republic until she immigrated to Canada in 1968. Arriving in Winnipeg she learned English and attended the University of Manitoba to certify as a teacher in the province. She began her teaching career in northern Manitoba, but eventually settled in Winnipeg where she taught until her retirement in 1996.
Emily met her husband Bob in Winnipeg and they enjoyed many happy years entertaining people in their home, boating on Lake Winnipeg and RVing across Canada and the United States. Emily always had a great love of animals. As a young woman in Slovakia she rode horses, an activity where she met her lifelong friend Dagmar Barak. Throughout her life she enjoyed the love and companionship of her many beloved dogs and cats. She also had a love of music, singing and playing guitar in the company of family and friends. Emily was active within Winnipeg’s Slovak community where she established and maintained many friendships. She enjoyed attending events at the Czech Club and with close friends, travelling abroad. She had a great love of reading, with a particular interest in Classical Antiquity. Emily’s Christian faith was an important source of strength and support in her journey through life. She regularly attended both St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church and Immanuel Pentecostal Church. Emily embraced a spirit of generosity. She was very philanthropic and donated to many charitable organizations over the years.
During her period of failing health, Emily was blessed with support from many friends in her local neighbourhood. The family would particularly like to thank Ian, Milton and Brenda who played an important role in helping Emily maintain her ability to remain in her home during these last few years. We also thank the medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their care of Emily in her final days and a special thank you to her cardiologist, Dr. Robert Kroeker, for his many years of compassionate care.
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
The family requests that friends visit Emily Markiw's tribute wall at www.bardal.ca where condolences, photos and stories may be placed for all to see.
