Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRANZ GEORG (GEORGE) WACHS
It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of George, our Father, Opa and Ur Opa.
He was the middle child of five born to Katharina and Paul Wachs in St. Ingbert, Saarland, Germany.
George had a very happy childhood. After finishing his schooling, he worked in a glass factory. He met his sweetheart Paula and they married in 1947. It was the beginning of a wonderful 72 year adventure. It was George who wanted to move to Canada as he thought there was more opportunity to be had for his family. In 1956, with their two sons, they did move and settled in Winnipeg. It was here he learned the upholstery trade, eventually starting his own business, Wachs Upholstery.
He had a love of football and played semi-pro in Germany. For many years he coached F.C. Germania Soccer Club and Carberry Challenge. World Cups were a family event, especially when Germany played. Brats and beer were the order of the day. He loved his Winnipeg Jets and the Bombers and never missed a game until his vision became a problem. Nothing made him happier than sitting around the table enjoying a good meal with his family. Family first always, but his second love had to be sitting in the back yard on his bench in the sun. Great joy was had by the simple things - planting a garden and watching it grow. Going out for ice cream with Mom or Chicken Chef with the family. He was a great father and an amazing Opa.
He is survived by his sons, Arno (Joan) and George. He will be deeply missed by grandchildren, Michael (Rosa), Phillip, Paula and George, great-grandchildren, Mattias, Damian and Annika. Missing him also are his sisters-in-law, Erika, Heidi and Anni and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his loving wife Paula, mother and father, mother and father-in-law Elsa and Wilhelm Hauck, brothers and sister, brothers and sisters-in-law, and daughter-in-law Jill.
Viewing will take place at Glen Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard on September 24, 2024 at 12:30 with graveside service following at 1:00.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Should you wish, please make a donation to the Manitoba Institute of the Blind.
Most importantly our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the exceptional staff of the Lions Personal Care Home. The quality of care, the level of expertise, and the kindness and compassion they show to each and every resident goes beyond compare. Thank you for taking such amazing care of our Dad for the last four and a half years.

Very sorry to hear of Mr Wachs' passing. He was our neighbour for years on Fifth Ave. He always liked to talk over the fence and I remember him working on upholstery in his garage. He kept such a nice yard also. He was a very nice man who lived a nice long life.!! - Posted by: collette gervais (macKenzie) (neighbour) on: Sep 23, 2024
