NORMA MAY ZIMMERMAN

It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norma Zimmerman, aged 91, at her residence in Winnipeg on October 5, 2024.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Norma moved to Winnipeg, Canada, when she was 18 to be close to her sister, Kathleen.

Norma married John Zimmerman in 1953, and three children soon followed.

Norma and family settled in Fort Rouge. She worked at the Pembina Drive-In for many years with relatives and many locals from the Fort Rouge area. Later, she worked for Marks & Spencer where she made many friends.

After retiring, she focused her energy on her hobbies, such as her love of knitting, crocheting and ceramics. Her family members were all happy recipients of her blankets. Norma was also known for her excellent baking. Her grandchildren will always treasure the memory of eating Grandma's chocolate chip cookies.

Norma is survived by her children, Donna (Maurice) Peak, David (Laura), and Linda; grandchildren, Brittany Peak, Tyrell (Francesca) Peak, Keiran (Emily), Ayla (Kristjan), Ivy and Ella Zimmerman; brother, Brian Johnstone; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Norma was predeceased by her parents, Sophia and William Johnstone; sisters, Kathleen Oliphant and Gwynne Hayton; nephew, Bill Oliphant; grand-nephew, David Caligiuri; and her beloved husband of 59 years, John Zimmerman.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Kiwanis Courts for their care and service over the last nine years. We also wish to thank Palliative Manitoba for their care and compassion over the last months, with a special thank you to Nurse Trish.

To honour Norma's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Norma's memory.

  • Well Norma, I have no idea of what actually finished you off, though I was told that you had a couple of falls. The only part of this that offers any solace, is that you didn't want to be the last Johnstone to go, and that is how it has worked out. I turned out to be the last one, while I had always felt that I would be the first to go. At my age, I can't expect to be far behind you, though I am in no hurry. RIP. Norma, and say HI, to all my friends and relatives, whom you bump into, on the other side. Love, Brian xxx. - Posted by: Brian Johnstone (Brother.) on: Nov 16, 2024
