Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER GEORGE WIRTZFELD
Walter Wirtzfeld, aged 95, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024, at ActionMarguerite in Winnipeg. His grandson, Eric, was by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey (nee Burns); daughter, Debrah (sons, Eric and Ryan); and son, Michael (daughters, Katarina and Johanna).
Born on March 15, 1929, in Humboldt Saskatchewan, Walter faced a difficult childhood. He was forced to leave school at the age of 13 to support his mother and family after the premature death of his father. He took on a number of jobs and did what he needed to do, successful in supporting his family and eventually landing on carpentry and construction as his permanent role. He met the love of his life, Audrey, in Edmonton, Alberta in 1961, and they moved to Calgary after being married on June 2, 1962. Walter was known for his love of the Calgary Flames and anything hockey, reading (something he taught himself later in life with the support of Audrey), and his family/extended family. As he had done while growing up, he supported many of those around him and would go to the ends of the earth for those who needed it.
Walter will be laid to rest at the Glen Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he will await his wife, Audrey. A Celebration of Life will be planned for some point in the future.

My deepest sympathy to Audrey, Michael, Debra and their families. I fondly recall driving and escorting Audrey to visit Walter and she would tell me their stories. The one that comes to mind is when she was on her way to teach school and was in a car accident on Deer Foot Trail in Calgary, and before she knew it, Walter had come to her rescue. At our visits I could see Walter as a kind and loving gentleman he must have always been. - Posted by: Bev Lischinski (companion) on: Oct 19, 2024
