Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • Brenda and I were neighbours of Tom and Velvet for many years. When we first moved to Headingley Tom was the first person to welcome us. He shared many stories of his family and was clearly very proud of them and loved them dearly. It was also clear how much Tom cared about his neighbours and community. We are so very sad to learn of his passing and offer our sincere condolences to Velvet. Brenda and Mike Grom - Posted by: Brenda and Mike Grom (Neighbour) on: Dec 02, 2024

  • Tom was a cherished friend, colleague, and a good person. Tom was a dedicated professional whose contributions made a significant impact during one of the most challenging times in recent history. Working together closely, I witnessed firsthand his unwavering commitment and resourcefulness in securing critical raw materials for the manufacture of Covid related products. His efforts undoubtedly helped save lives and supported countless individuals in need. Beyond his professionals achievements, Tom was a friend - kind, dependable, and always ready to lend a helping hand. His warmth and humor brightened the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Tom. - Posted by: Nelson Kalin (Friend) on: Nov 18, 2024

  • I've grown to know Tom over the past decade and a half. Within the limited scope of our friendship, I could tell I only knew a sliver of the complete man that was Tom Roche. However, looking at his three sons, I know he was a loving, caring father that put his family first before all else. Tom had wholesome values steeped in him over his lifetime, that are a rare treasure today. I saw how he and Velvet looked at each other, and how he could made her laugh. Tom had a presidential air about him, yet when you talked with him eye-to-eye, you felt, rightly or wrongly, that you had his absolute and undivided attention and that he truly cared about what you had to say. He held significant, impactful positions throughout his career, yet did not let those define him; he was humble and full of true grace. We'll miss you alot, Tom. Deepest condolences to Velvet, Karsten, Regen, Lachlan. - Posted by: Lucas Baird (Friend) on: Nov 08, 2024

  • Tom and I met through our youngest sons playing ultimate and football together. I am so grateful he didn't let G7 take the trip to Waterloo by himself because that sparked a friendship with his beautiful family. He brought so much fun to games, selfless help to the community, and great encouragement to the boys. We spent many wonderful hours on fields in all kinds of weather and watched streamed games together with so very much laughter when we couldn't be there in person. Velvet, my sweet friend, every butterfly that flutters by will ring your and Tom's laughter in my mind. Thank you for sharing so many good times with us! You are in my prayers. His love, joy and spirit will carry you through this very challenging journey forward without him. Your wonderful boys are his beautiful legacy. - Posted by: Jennifer McDonald (Family Friend) on: Nov 07, 2024

  • Tom and I met while attending the Aircraft Maintenance Program at Confederation College. After graduation I went right to Standard Aero and then about a year later I was able to help Tom get a job at Standard Aero. Tom had a stellar career at Standard Aero. Helped by Tom’s great ability to talk with people, managers and executives with ease. Hearing the news of Tom’s passing from Brian Hughes left me shocked and saddened. Tom’s positive energy and warm smile and sharp sense of humor will be missed by all. My heart goes out to Velvet and the boys. You’re in my prayers with wishes that you remain strong through this tough time. May Tom’s soul and spirit now rest in peace with God in heaven, surrounded by God’s love and warmth. - Posted by: Jim Taylor (Confederation College Alumni and co-worker at StandardAero) on: Nov 07, 2024

  • Karen and I are so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. Tom and I met in high school and quickly became best friends. We spent countless hours cruising in his Mustang or my Camaro. We double dated, played hockey together, were the bane of several high school teachers and as teenagers forged a lifetime relationship. We both pursued careers in aviation which took us on different life paths. Tom was the best man at my wedding and, before he left Thunder Bay, would graciously and awkwardly babysit our oldest daughter when I had to fly and Karen had to work. Time and location separated us but when we did get together time regressed and we were essentially young again. My memories of Tom are many and vivid. Velvet, you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God’s grace give you strength in this hard time. Brad Greaves - Posted by: Brad Greaves (Longtime Friend) on: Nov 07, 2024

  • I had the immense pleasure and privilege of hiring Tom for the Mint. From the time I first met him, it was easy to understand why he had such a successful career and so beloved by those wo had the privilege to know him. He embodied every aspect of the word "Gentleman". He was kind, considerate, compassionate and was blessed with an intellect that was only matched by his great sense of humor. You could always count on Tom to cheer you up or just make time spent together more enjoyable. He could strike a conversation with anyone and make them feel comfortable within minutes, especially if he flashed his big old smile and shared a good laugh. Impossible to resist the positivity he exuded. I will sorely miss our chats about life, family (Velvet and the boys were everything to him), and of course the Jets and his beloved Blue Bombers. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: michel boucher (Co-worker and friend ) on: Nov 06, 2024

  • I am so saddened by this. I worked for and with Tom for a number of years. I learned so much from him. He always had a very professional and personal way of helping me develop. If he needed to pull me into his office I was not in for a "whooping" but rather a great learning opportunity. He had a very natural way about him with Customers and employees. He was a very inspirational leader. Outside of work activities he was such a genuine human - always remembering what you might be going through. We have lost a truly good man. My deepest condolences to Tom's family and hope you can draw on his legacy as you work through your grief. - Posted by: Oliver W Albig (Co-worker / friend) on: Nov 06, 2024

  • Shocked and saddened to hear of Tom's passing. We only worked in the same business unit for a short time, but will always remember him as a kind & caring guy who was always ready with a smile and encouraging word. The world is a lesser place without him. My sympathies to his family. - Posted by: Jim Smith (Co-worker (StandardAero)) on: Nov 06, 2024

  • One of the best people I ever worked for. Even though he was my boss I considered him my friend. He called me "Bubba" because a had worked in TN at Standard Aero Alliance. He truly cared for his staff. His infectious laugh brightened the room. I will really miss him. - Posted by: Chris Radons (Co-worker at SAL) on: Nov 05, 2024

  • I had the privilege of working alongside Tom for eight wonderful years at the Mint. He was one of the kindest, smartest, and most caring people I've ever known, and his sense of humor brought so much joy to those around him. Tom was universally loved and respected—he truly made a difference in our lives. He was always just a text away, and I treasured the bond we shared. Tom’s love for his family was the heart of who he was. He would light up when speaking about Velvet, and he was so immensely proud of Karsten, Regen, Lachlan, and, of course, his beloved fur baby, Finley. I am deeply saddened by his passing and will miss him greatly. My heartfelt condolences go out to you, Velvet, and the boys. With all my sympathy, Karen - Posted by: Karen Ausmus (Friend) on: Nov 05, 2024

  • My condolences to Tom's wife and children, I am saddened to hear of Tom's passing this morning way too young. Tom and I have known each other for too many years to mention. I always liked working with Tom. In particular I got to know him well back in the mid 90's when we worked together in the prop cell at SA. Back then I would shave once a week and Tom would always remind me by saying something like "Can't afford a razor" or "missed a spot this morning". To this very day when I don't shave for a few days I think of Tom and laugh. Silly story maybe but we did laugh about it. Take care Chris. - Posted by: Chris Russell (Co-worker at Standard Aero Ltd) on: Nov 05, 2024
