We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Lonnie Raymond Goodfellow on November 1, 2024. Born to Les and Val Goodfellow on April 6, 1957, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Lonnie touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
A proud veteran and artilleryman, Lonnie served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 42 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. Enlisting in 1975, he quickly distinguished himself as a model soldier, embodying the discipline and dedication of the Canadian military. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration for his years of service, received the NATO Medal for his deployment in Germany, and served twice as a UN peacekeeper in Cyprus, first in 1982 and again in 1992.
Lonnie was deeply involved in the hockey community throughout his life as a player, coach, and referee. In 1990, he led the 1RCHA Gunners to victory in the Canadian Forces Europe Hockey League (CFEHL) championship. He contributed to minor hockey leagues in both Germany and Canada, first as a coach, and later becoming a referee and dedicating himself to mentoring and coaching young referees, especially through his role a Referee-in-Chief for the Kerry Park Minor Hockey Association.
Alongside his involvement in hockey, Lonnie was a passionate fan of the sport. The Montreal Canadiens held a cherished place in his heart, and he supported them faithfully for over 50 years, through every triumph and setback. His loyalty as a Canadiens fan naturally came with a spirited disdain for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He thoroughly enjoyed a good-natured ribbing of his fellow Leafs fans. For a final time, in true Habs fashion: “Leafs suck, GO HABS GO!!!”
Lonnie was preceded in death by his father, Les, and is lovingly remembered by his mother, Val; his brother, Rod; his children, Lon-Marie, Brendan, and Skylar; his cherished grandchildren, Emmalie, Aidan, Ava, and Zoe; his nieces, Meaghan and Melanie, and nephew, Stuart.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, November 8th at the Sargent’s Mess at CFB Shilo from 13h00-16h00.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Lonnie’s name can be made to honourhouse.ca

In the company of so many of his old friends and comrades across The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, I was deeply saddened by news of Captain (Ret'd) Goodfellow's unexpected death. Lonnie and I first met when I was a young officer serving in 3 RCHA in the early 80s. I soon came to regard him with great and steadily growing respect for the fine soldier, Gunner, and leader that he was. Such mental and physical resilience, acuity of thought and word, good humour, and loyalty to The Regiment and all its members as he exhibited, served as an example worthy of emulation by all ranks. I will always remember and be grateful for the contribution that he, and men like him, made to the professional culture and cohesive regimental life we enjoyed during that era. They were the best of times. Later, from afar, I observed approvingly his rapid progression through the ranks, and was especially proud when him took the Queen’s Commission and with it, the opportunity to broaden the horizons of his beneficial influence. His passing constitutes a hard blow to his family and friends. It is, therefore, my hope that the knowledge that so many of his fellow Gunners hold them and Lonnie in our thoughts, will provide some degree of solace as they mourn his loss. Good Shooting, Lonnie. I was so saddened to hear of Lonnie’s passing. I would like to pass on to Lonnie’s family my most sincere condolences. I knew Lonnie shortly after he arrived in Shilo in 1975. We all graduated on the same graduation parade and spent our youth in 3 RCHA. Lonnie was a great soldier, excellent leader and good friend to many. Over his many years of service Lonnie continued to be a dedicated professional who taught the art of Gunnery to many many soldiers. An intelligent soldier who enjoyed the technical aspects of the trade as well as leading soldiers. I will always remember how much he loved hockey, the Habs and winning the championship in Europe. He was well known throughout the Regiment for keeping track of guys after retirement and keeping the rest of us up to date. Rest in Peace Lonnie, Stand Easy, Always missed, never forgotten. - Posted by: Ernest Wylie (Soldiers ) on: Nov 09, 2024

My heart goes out to everyone that knew him. Lonnie was BSM C Battery for our UN Deployment to Cyprus '92. He was a great mentor who taught me a lot about Leadership, especially how to walk the fine line between being approachable without having the troops loosing sight that you're still in charge. Lonnie had and will always have the respect of those that served with him and he will be missed especially at the reunions. EOM Stand Easy May Lonnie Rest in Eternal Peace UBIQUE - Posted by: Cam Davie (Fellow Veteran ) on: Nov 06, 2024
