With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ernie Obirek on November 1, 2024, at the age of 83. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, with family by his side during his final days and moments.
Born in Winnipeg, Ernie spent his early years in the city before moving to rural southeastern Manitoba, where he resided for the rest of his life. He shared 41 years of marriage with Ruth (Dyck) Obirek, dedicated to creating memorable experiences for their children and grandchildren.
Family was everything to Ernie. He cherished every moment spent with his children and six grandchildren, supporting their education and adventures. His passion for life created lasting memories, from camping trips and fishing to Disney World. Ernie was known for his infectious humor and warmth, always ready for a good conversation and laugh.
He attended school in Elmwood and joined the Winnipeg Police Service at 19, serving just over 30 years working in both uniform and as a detective and as a member of the Police Pipe Band. He retired as a Sergeant in 1991.
After retirement, Ernie opened Westside Sports Cards, forging friendships in the community. He later worked for Manitoba Lotteries and enjoyed his time at the Tache Landfill Site, connecting with community members.
An adventurer at heart, Ernie loved learning about different cultures and sharing stories. His curiosity and spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
