Raymond Hebert was born on July 27, 1943, in St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, MB. He passed away peacefully on Monday morning, October 28, 2024, surrounded by family.
He was the oldest of nine siblings - six boys and three girls. His first word was, apparently, “attendez”, meaning "wait"! Perhaps it was being the oldest in a large family that attributed to his patient character, which he displayed his entire life, right until his passing.
Ray has always loved sports; was a star in the St. Pierre Braves in his late teens. He also curled, was an avid hunter, played baseball, and golfed, his hole in one a few years ago, was well deserved. Throughout his life, he served on various committees & boards, as well as being a Knights of Columbus Member much of his adult life. He was a successful businessman and provided employment for many people in his grocery store. Since retiring in 2009, he worked at Maplewood Golf until the end of 2023 season, and absolutely loved it. Whether Ray was their boss or fellow employee, people have always liked working for and with him. He made work 'fun'. Whatever Ray’s accomplishments, his greatest pride has always been his family - his two daughters, Charlene (Ryan) & Michelle (John) and in 1994, when he married Wilma, he became stepdad to five children; Jodi (Kevin), Charlotte (Mike), Trina (Kostas), Michael (Linda), Rebecca. All but one of these seven children got their first paid job experience at the local IGA that he owned and managed for many years. He was also Grandpa to nine grandchildren - Ryley, Lexie, Daniel, Micah (Joel), Josiah, Lydia, Tobias, Sarah, Huck.
Ray has always enjoyed life and has never been a complainer, made the best of whatever situation he was in, including this past year. On October 26, 2023, Ray suffered a massive stroke, affecting his entire left side and leaving him quite dependent on caregivers. Throughout this last year, Ray continued to show courage, a sense of humor, appreciation for the little things, for his family & friends. He certainly expressed disappointment and sadness at his huge losses, but has been an example of patience, character, faith, friendship and many other things. He was still Ray Hebert, a man of dignity, courage, humility, a good father, husband, grandpa, brother and friend. He is already missed by our family and also the community. We have lost a good man.
Ray was predeceased by his parents, Maria (Robidoux) & Wilfrid Hebert.
Ray is survived by: Wife Wilma, all seven children & grandchildren as listed above. As well as his eight siblings; Jules (Paulette), Guy (Marlene), Claude (Marcella), Jacques (Denyse), Monique (Marcel), Gerald (Marilyn), Gisele, Huguette (Richard) nieces & nephews & several aunts & uncles.
