Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIAN ALEXANDER MCCORRISTER
Our hearts are beyond broken. Our kind, quirky, brilliant son and brother, Ian, passed away due to a tragic accident during a university semester in Trondheim, Norway.
Ian grew community wherever he went. At school he participated in track and ultimate, and had the best group of friends who played music and soccer together. The Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) was a second home where he shared the magic of creating stories with others. An integral part of 1st Crestview Scouts, he offered community service, and mentorship to other youth. Through the United Church, he participated in creating a reconciliation mural, and volunteered with the Thunderbirdz, providing support for those who are unhoused. Always exceptionally bright, Ian completed the full International Baccalaureate program at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, and maintained a 4.45 GPA at the University of Winnipeg. With a unique style, he loved what he loved with abandon - all things Doctor Who, cheering on Valour FC, running, studying history, memorizing every country and flag of the world, and writing plays for the family to perform.
Ian will be forever missed by his parents, Kevin and Kirsten, and his brother, Finlay, sharing 19 years of adventures and love. He will be cherished by his loving family: Gramma (Marilyn McCorrister); Gramp (Rick McCorrister and spouse Catherine Barnsley); Nana (Donna Earl); Grandad (Paul Earl and wife Pat); aunts and uncles, Andrea and Ernie, Andrew, Stuart and Sheryl, Robert and Suki; and cousins, Holden and Micah McCorrister, Holly Reichert, and Alice and Xavier Muzyk. Though their time together was short, his girlfriend, Ivy Gwendo, will always hold him in her heart. Ian will be remembered by friends from school, camps and retreats, MTYP, and Scouts.
Service of celebration to be held Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Westworth United Church. All are welcome. A livestream will be available. Contact office@westworth.ca for the link. To honour Ian, donations to the:
Ian McCorrister Memorial Fund (www.wpgfdn.org/IanMcCorrister)
are appreciated to support causes important to Ian that will bring joy and support to others. Gratefully declining cards and flowers.

My condolences to Ian McCorrister Family. I am the Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Granddaughter of Alexander McCorrister the first McCorrister (Born 1765 St. Mary's Whitechapel, England) to come to Canada and then to Red River Settlement area. My Grandfather was George Alexander McCorrister; who was married to Mary Spence and are Peguis First Nation members. We have a lot of McCorrister's across North America both Canadian and American. The original McCorrister's own land all along the Red River by Lockport, MB. and they were Lots 150, 151, 152, and so on. This land was taken away when Lord Selkirk came and claimed the land for The Royal Family of England. The McCorristers were displaced and moved all over North America. I have done a lot of family research and the McCorrister's are Irish originally then moved to Scotland then to England. Our original name was McCrystals. I am sorry for your loss and but am happy that I noticed Ian's obit. he sure looks like the McCorrister's - very strong, proud and handsome young man. Please accept my deepest sympathy and cherish those memories of Ian as they will never leave but linger on forever as the love you have for him will forever be cherished and held close to the heart. My heartfelt sympathy to my McCorrister Family! - Posted by: Sheryl McCorrister (Family (Distant)) on: Feb 25, 2025

My heart goes out to your family. Last fall, Ian was a student of mine and he made our Reading to Write Creatively course a bright, wonderful place to be. Ian regularly shared his thoughts on poetry and short fiction, the two genres we studied; his particular interest in short fiction and stories was notable. An awesome writer, he excelled at helping to create community in the classroom, in peer review, and in writing and also presenting in front of the class and with great poise. My teaching was effortless and a real pleasure having Ian in class, and it was very clear how much he enjoyed learning about writing and discussing literature. His talent clear and his efforts truly appreciated by everyone in the class, especially me. I wish every student I taught was as bright and keen and enthusiastic and original as Ian. Again, my heart goes out to you and your family, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: James Scoles (Professor) on: Nov 23, 2024

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. The shock of Ian's passing is difficult to fathom. I enjoyed teaching French to Ian so much, he was an excellent student and a wonderful, funny, kind and unique person. I have been thinking of him and speaking with other teachers at Sturgeon, and we have all been sharing our favourite Ian moments. I will always remember Ian, he left a profound impact on me when he was in my classroom and he was an amazing person. - Posted by: Kelly Carvelli (Teacher) on: Nov 18, 2024
