Frances Winnifred (Winnie) Warkentin, 88, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully on November 8, 2024, at Grace Hospital, after an illustrious career as a nursing educator and administrator. She was born in Lowe Farm, Manitoba but travelled and taught widely across the world before she returned to Canada to teach and then settle in retirement in Winnipeg, where she had many friends.
Winnie completed high school in Steinbach, graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg, and completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree at McGill University. After graduation, she worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) on nursing education initiatives internationally, including in Malaysia, India, and Pakistan.
One of the greatest of Winnie’s many accomplishments came in 1979 when she was appointed the first Director of the School of Nursing at the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi, Pakistan. Since her death teachers at the AKU have been sharing warm remembrances of her achievements there. Salimah Walani, today’s Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery notes that she "created something that has influenced thousands of lives, particularly that of young women and their families."
Winnie is survived by her brother John (Germaine), multiple generations of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Isaac and Mary, sister Helen, and brother Alfred.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Opera, and Winnipeg Public Library.
A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, with a viewing Wednesday, November 21, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

She was a really nice person. I knew her when I came to Canada. She use to come and see me for her nails and facial at Giselle’s. She went back to India and met my family. Very knowledgeable and beautiful soul. Sadly missed by everyone who knew her. May her soul rest in peace. Om shanti 🙏🏽 - Posted by: Anita Tandon (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2024
