JAMES DANIEL DOUGLAS
Date of Passing: Nov 06, 2024
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES DANIEL DOUGLAS
It is with immense sorrow we announce the passing of James Daniel Douglas on Wednesday November 6, 2024. He passed peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre with his close family by his side. Jim was a loving husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to so many. He will lovingly be remembered by all of his family and friends.
Jim grew up in the North End of Winnipeg. A personal history he was very proud of. There he made many long lasting and meaningful friendships especially while attending St. John’s High School. He carried those friendships throughout his whole adult life until his later years. Jim so enjoyed meeting and helping people. He had a way of making everyone feel important and heard. This was why he was often seen in grocery stores saying, “I knew them from the North End, I haven’t seen them in 20 (or 30) years!” He made a lot of friends no matter where he was in life and remembered everyone. His compassion for those who were struggling in their lives was always clear. He dedicated 33 years of his life to his career in Manitoba Justice and retired as a Deputy Registrar for the Court of Kings Bench in 2016. Jim was always a beloved colleague who had everyone laughing a little more than they should. Which was the way he lived his life. Kind, compassionate, hard-working, intelligent and beautifully flawed.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick Douglas and Ann McRae, and many more loving family members whom he loved very much. Survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Christina Donovan, daughter Ashlee Douglas and son-in-law Scott Newland. He will also be missed by his stepdaughter Lee-Anna Cramm (Clint Cramm), stepson David Daniels (Jennifer Daniels). Jim also leaves six grandchildren, Kyla Turner (Justina), Cassidy Cramm (Janessa Cramm), Terrilyn Daniels, Torri Daniels, Timothy Daniels and Eric Newland-Neal. Also, four wonderful great-grandchildren, Mika, Nico, Morgan and Wade.
Please join his family and close friends for a Celebration of Life for Jim on November 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel at 1020 Main St., Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Agape Table and dedicating it to Jim. Thank you to all the healthcare professionals and members of Health Sciences Centre emergency, GA5 for their dedication and care. Special thanks to Dr. Matthew Mclellend of GA5 who truly went above and beyond to care for our family when we needed it the most.

I was just thinking about him and wondered how he was. We went to Machray school together. He was a very good friend of mine. He always managed to find me and we would hang out together. We had some very good memories together. I'm going to miss him even though it's been a few years since we last met - Posted by: Eric stewner (Personal friend) on: Jun 30, 2025

I was very sad to hear about Jim's passing. I regret that due to moving I didn't hear the bad news till March 2025. I first met Jim working with the St James Police Force. Several years later I worked with Jim while with the Manitoba Sheriff Services until Jim began working with the court system. Jim was a good friend who liked a good joke or told a good joke. He was a loyal friend with a kind heart. He will be missed. I offer my condolences to Jim's wife, the children and the grandchildren. Sincerely, Bill Bell - Posted by: Bill Bell (friend) on: Mar 13, 2025

"Are You Watching?", is the first thing he'd say when I went up to his Counter at Q.B.: 'Cos I once said, "Only Gail Platt has worse taste in men than me." That's when he realised that I, too, was a big Corrie Street Fan. I was an Associate and could only watch on Sunday mornings & he would watch every night and I'd say: 'don't tell me,' or vice versa... Once, as a hyper ventilating Associate, I went to file at his Counter, I was sweating through a Green Suede Blazer. Jim said, "Take it Easy." Chuckle. Sometimes he would give me an extra Divorce Certificate, for my ease. Documents always landed up where they should and Jim was the kindest Clerk to the Lawyers. One last Order should be issued to honor him for his great contribution to the Administration of Justice. - Posted by: Robin Zeiss (colleague) on: Jan 27, 2025

I met Jim in 1988 while articling for the Legal Aid Manitoba Criminal Law Office on Broadway. Jim had a senior position at the Sheriff's Office at the time. He was always courteous and helpful to me as an articling student and then as a young lawyer. I continued to work with Jim when he was at the Maintenance Enforcement Program where he was tough but reasonable. At the end of Jim's career, he was a Deputy Registrar at Court of Queen's Bench and I saw him almost daily when I filed court documents. My older son met Jim when he we was working for me as a runner and liked Jim so much that he invited Jim to his Bar Mitzvah. Jim was kind, courteous, and helpful. He had a generous spirit and a kind heart and I never heard him say a cross word. I am sorry that I missed the death announcement and the funeral. Jim was one of those rare souls who bore no ill will to anyone and gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. I will always miss Jim. My condolences to Jim's family. - Posted by: Phillip Cramer (colleague) on: Nov 20, 2024

I knew Jim latterly in my professional capacity as a lawyer, and Jim was first a sheriff's officer, and then subsequently a registrar in the Court of Queen's Bench. But I originally met Jim when we were both 16-17 years old and high school kids working evenings and Saturdays at the then T. Eaton Co. on Portage Avenue. Jim was friendly, affable and helpful back then, and remained the same throughout his career at Manitoba Justice. I always liked running into Jim at the Courthouse and we'd joke and reminisce about the characters we met, and the shenanigans we witnessed, working retail back in the days of yore. I was greatly saddened to learn of his death. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Douglas J. Johnston (friend) on: Nov 18, 2024

Jim was a truly kind and gifted Deputy Registrar with Court of Queen's Bench. He left an impression by demonstrating through his assistance that he really cared unlike much of the other staff. Having grown up across the street from his wife Chris Donovan I was surprised at finding they were planning their nuptials on the same day as my very own. Should memory serve me correctly Jim's retirement party at the St Vital Hotel was the last time we spoke. My sincerest condolences to Jim's loved ones as we memorialize him. - Posted by: Kris Anderson (Friend) on: Nov 17, 2024

I had the privilege of working with Jim. He always had a smile on his face and a story to share. He took the time to connect with people and was a favourite to many who waited in line to be served by him. He will be missed. I worked off and on with Jim, and I felt this sentence. “Jim was always a beloved colleague who had everyone laughing a little more than they should.” He made a solid impact in a lot of people’s lives and was always a very nice and fun guy to be around. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Paula Rutledge (Former colleague) on: Nov 17, 2024

I worked with Jim for many years at the court of Queen’s Bench. I found Jim to be kind and knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I very quickly became his work friend and enjoyed our many years working together. Jim was always willing to give a hand, explain something to me and even make a person feel better with his kind encouragement. I am saddened to hear of his passing and wish deepest condolences to his family and to all who knew and loved him. - Posted by: Lesley Larsen (Friend and co-worker) on: Nov 17, 2024

Absolutely gutted to hear of Jim's passing. Jim was the most dedicated friend and as a colleague, he was my rock. Truthfully, his words of wisdom and encouragement, little check-ins with got me through challenges. When no one was on my side, Jim stood proudly beside me. When he places his trust and opens his heart to you, it was forever. Life is duller without your presence. Rest easy my dear friend. Sending all my love to his family. I never knew much about James but considered him a friend as he helped me when I was suing the federal government of Canada. There is a term for what I did: "a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client" James never treated me like a fool, to the contrary he gave me hope and perseverance. I carried these to attributes for the rest of my life. Thank you and God bless you James. Kim. - Posted by: Kim Sigurdson (Friend) on: Nov 16, 2024
