BRYAN (RUSTY) PATRICK SLATER

Rusty peacefully passed away on Monday morning, November 18, 2024 at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 74 years. He was a loving and devoted son, the best brother ever, and a good uncle.

Rusty was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Joan; his son Johnathan and his brother Earle.

He is deeply missed by his sister Susan, and his nieces, Robyn and Samantha; his nephew Corey; his great-nephews, Dario and Freddy; and great-niece Ayla, along with cousins and extended family.

Rusty was born during the big flood of 1950 and when his parents moved to Charleswood where he was raised and went to schools Dieppe, Royal, and the Charleswood Collegiate. He went on to the University of Winnipeg to study history and geography and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then went to the University of Manitoba to study education and graduated with a degree in Pedagogy. He spent 37 years teaching all grade levels in northern Manitoba schools; first in Churchill, then Snow Lake, then to Flin Flon where he retired as a middle school teacher. He claims it was the middle school that made him lose his hair, but he loved teaching kids at that level.

Right from a very young age he had a love for cars and had quite a collection of miniatures. He knew everything about each make and model. This love of cars continued throughout his life. His dream was to visit Jay Leno’s garage. He also showed great artistic talent at a young age and Mom made sure he attended art classes to increase his abilities. While living in northern Manitoba he loved to paint the many scenic lakes and waterfalls. He also liked to draw cartoons and caricatures of people. He loved to surprise his students with their caricatures on special occasions like grad or awards day.

He was a big man, a good man with a kind and giving heart. He had a deep love of reading, writing and history. He also enjoyed golfing and bike rides, and to share time with his nieces and nephew. Most of all he loved a good joke. My brother had a great sense of humour and always had a smile in the morning no matter how ill he felt.

The family would like to thank his wonderful homecare team; Kyla, Jennifer, Margaret and Cara all for their help, kindness and respect they gave Rusty. We would also like to thank his physician Dr. Tempi Ajayi for all his help and guidance through tough times. Thank you to the medical team at Health Sciences Centre ICU as well as the staff at Stonewall Hospital for the compassion and kindness that they showed him.

Flowers gratefully declined in favour of donations to a place of your choice. Rusty liked to give to the research centres.

A Celebration of Life for Bryan will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.

Rest in peace Boo,

we all loved you and will miss you.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was so sorry to hear of Rusty’s sudden passing! Thinking of you Sue! Hugs! - Posted by: Kathy Dudar Mathieson (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2024

  • I am very sad to learn of Rusty's passing. We met in high school and shared a friendship for over 50 years. We had a common interest in cars - classic cars, race cars and hot rods. We studied together during our time at university. Although I moved to BC in the 1990's, I got back to Charleswood (and later Stonewall) to look him up regularly. I will miss him terribly. - Posted by: Greg Marshall (Friend) on: Nov 30, 2024
