DORIS MAE SUTHERLAND

(nee CAVES)

September 28, 1925 -

October 25, 2024

Sadly, we announce the peaceful passing of Doris Mae Sutherland on October 25, 2024, having just turned 99 years of age.

Doris was born in Rowletta, Saskatchewan, an identical twin with Elva Rae, to mother Anne Caves and father Thomas Caves. She was one of six children. The Caves family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the early 1930s where Doris went to Earl Grey Elementary and graduated from Kelvin High School, Class of 1942.

Following High School Doris became a Legal Secretary at the CPR, married Angus Mackenzie Sutherland in 1952, and retired in 1954 to start a family and become a mother. The Sutherland family moved to the community of Tuxedo in 1960 and remained there until they moved to Ocean Park in South Surrey, BC in 1992.

Doris was fun-loving, very social, enjoyed parties and entertaining friends and family. She was also musical, played the piano and sang in church choirs. In the 1970s in Winnipeg Doris held several positions on the Board of the Women’s Musical Club, the Board of Day Nursery Centre and worked in the Administration at Extendicare Tuxedo Villa. In the 1990s Doris was an active member in the Be-Welcome Club of South Surrey/White Rock. Playing Bridge was a favourite hobby and she joined several Bridge clubs in Winnipeg and South Surrey.

Doris was a very involved mother and grandmother and the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren brought her great joy. She was always there to provide support and encouragement and will be greatly missed.

Doris was a positive thinking person and believed that after any misfortune in life you had to pick yourself up, put a smile on your face, and carry on. This belief is the gift she gave to everyone who knew her. She loved beauty and fashion and was known for her elegance and sense of style.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Angus; her sisters: Helen Fetherstonhaugh (and Derek), Elva Johnson (and Robert), Carol Ramsden (and Roger); her brother Donald Caves (and Dorothy) and brother-in-law Alan Owens. Doris is survived by one sister, Thelma Owens; three children: Sharon Olson (Lyndon), Angus Sutherland (Holly), Heather Henry (Garnet Vickers); four grandchildren: Kaleigh and Kristin Henry, Sheena and Lauren Sutherland and an extended family of 17 nephews and nieces.

The Sutherland Family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Peninsula Retirement Living in Surrey, BC and Evergreen/The Pointe Care Home in White Rock, BC. A Celebration of Life for Doris Sutherland will be held at a future date.
