JOSEPH ZADRAVEC

February 7, 1951 - November 22, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Zadravec, age 73, of Winnipeg, Canada, on November 22, 2024. A beloved father, fiancé, grandfather, brother, and friend, Joseph's life was a testament to love, devotion, and hard work.

Born on February 7, 1951, in Ljutomer, Slovenia, Joseph was the son of Stefan and Elizabeth Zadravec, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his wife, Irena Zadravec, and his brother Frank Zadravec. Survived by his son, Zenon Zadravec, and his wife Jamiliah; his fiancée, Maria Bloch; bonus children, Marius, Britany, Ivona, Michael, Justin and his grandchildren, Freddie, Aaron, Marcus, Jordan, Justus, and great-granddaughter Aaliyah. Joseph's family was the center of his world. He is also survived by his brother Marijan Zadravec, along with cherished extended family members.

Joseph began his education in Slovenia, graduating from high school before pursuing trade school in Germany. His journey led him to Canada in 1970, where he built a remarkable life. It was there that he met Irena, with whom he started a family and raised their son, Zenon. Joseph's dedication to providing a stable and loving home was evident in every aspect of his life. In 1984, he built the family home in Winnipeg, taking care to personally oversee every detail to create a legacy for his loved ones.

A man of great ambition and intellect, Joseph pursued higher education while balancing his roles as a devoted husband and father. He earned a double major in Justice and Law Enforcement and Business Administration from the University of Winnipeg and later obtained a Master's in Public Administration specializing in Immigration Policy from the University of Manitoba.

Joseph’s professional journey was diverse and impactful. He began his career as an auto electrician in Thompson, Manitoba before joining Fort Ignition, where he worked for 25 years. Afterward, he served with Revenue Canada and shared his expertise as an educator, teaching classes at the University of Manitoba. These roles allowed him to inspire others and contribute meaningfully to his community. Later, Joseph transitioned to Corrections Canada, where he served as a parole officer for 23 years. In this capacity, he worked tirelessly to guide individuals toward better paths, demonstrating compassion, fairness, and a steadfast commitment to justice until his retirement.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joseph was a man of many talents and passions. He was fluent in multiple languages, an avid follower of politics and European football, a wine enthusiast, and a skilled craftsman who enjoyed home renovations. His creative spirit also found expression in writing political essays and crime novels.

Above all, Joseph was a devoted family man. He instilled strong morals and values in his son, Zenon, and brought joy to his grandchildren, especially cherishing his time playing with Freddie. In his later years, Joseph found companionship and happiness with his fiancée, Maria, and continued to share his love with those closest to him.

Joseph Zadravec's legacy is one of unwavering love, determination, and kindness. His family and friends will forever remember his warm heart, sharp mind, and generous spirit. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a lasting impact on all who knew him.

  • When I began my career with CSC, Joe was very welcoming and I attended many rural communities of MB with him. Joe took his work seriously but also loved to joke with staff. He and his wife, Irena visited our home. Irena, being a travel agent was extremely knowledgeable about where and when to travel. Joe loved life and being at his lake home at Wpg Beach and often spoke about this. He will be missed by many. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Belinda Russell (Colleague) on: Dec 05, 2024

  • I worked with Joe at the Winnipeg Parole office. I served 35 years in the Military prior to working with CSC, here at the parole office. One morning, Joe saw one of my statues from the military, which had the names of several towns in Bosnia. Banja Luka, Dubrovnik to name a few; Joe spent a few minutes, well about 20 Minutes telling me stories about his family and trips they had taking. Having been to Bosnia, I learned some of the local language and Joe always took the time to help me practice speaking and teach me more of the language. I will miss our conversations. zbogom Joe My condolences to family and Friends. - Posted by: Eric Dietz (Co Worker) on: Dec 02, 2024
