Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOVEEN ELIZABETH KANER
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Oveen Elizabeth Kaner passed away on November 17, 2024, surrounded by those who loved her.
Oveen was born in Carryduff, Northern Ireland on January 31, 1937, the eldest daughter of Eleanor and Thomas Gilmore. She emigrated to Canada at the age of 17, eventually settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which she called home for over 50 years before joining her daughter in Calgary, Alberta.
Oveen was a fiercely proud woman, known for her strength, determination and independence. One of her greatest accomplishments and sense of pride was raising her four children and being "Bobbi" to her grandchildren.
She was a beautiful woman, always insisting on looking her best. She had an incredible sense of humour and wit and an ability to put others at ease. She touched many hearts and lives, whether through her care and compassion as a health care aide, or through her genuine desire to help people in every day life. Despite not having much herself, she never hesitated to extend a hand or help someone in need, including providing a roof over their head.
She will be missed dearly by all those that loved her, especially her four children, Paula Kaner, Beverley Kaner, Laura Kaner-Isaak (Andy) and Sidney Avis (Caroline); grandchildren, Aaron, Evan, Sam, Hannah, Jacob, Nathan, Lily, Alfie and Harry, and great-grandchild Arrow. She also leaves behind family in Northern Ireland, including her brother Andrew (Valerie), beloved sister Eileen (predeceased), brother-in-law Barry; nieces and nephews, Diane, Stephen, Tara, and Dax (Amanda), among many extended relatives.
Private services to be held in Calgary, Winnipeg, and her final resting place, "home" in Northern Ireland.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to donate in Oveen’s memory to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Calgary and Winnipeg chapters.
We were fortunate to have had her for the time that we did and thankful for the many lessons that she had to share. We take comfort that she is now resting peacefully.

My condolences for your loss. Oveen was the last of all my aunts and uncles. While I didn't know your mother well, I did attend her wedding to my Uncle and the reception afterwards at Baba Anna's place. My parents always spoke very highly of her whenever they were invited to her place for supper for special occasions like Christmas, Easter, birthdays, etc. Mom always said how friendly and inviting she was to them and how much they enjoyed their visits. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: David Abrams (Nephew) on: Dec 04, 2024
