KATHERINE (KAY) NEMETH

It is with great sadness that the family of Kay Nemeth announce her peaceful passing on December 6, 2024 at the Riverview Health Centre.

Kay was predeceased by her husband Robert in 2014. Left to mourn her passing are her brother Michael (Jan), her children, Robert (Maureen), Stephen (Cheryl), Peter, Mary (Doug) and eight grandchildren. Kay was immensely proud of them all, and of their accomplishments, and her four great-grandchildren were a source of great joy in her later years.

Born Katherine Sykes in 1935 in Fort William, Ontario, Kay spent a happy childhood in several northern Ontario mining communities where her father Gerald Sykes was a teacher and school principal. She learned to golf at an early age, was an accomplished amateur, and continued to enjoy the game well into her early eighties.

Kay became an X-ray technician in Fort Francis, Ontario where she met Robert, was married in 1959, and moved to Winnipeg where they raised their family. Along with Robert, Kay owned MapleKrest Kennels in Cooks Creek, MB for many years and was active in the Labrador Retriever community, St. Michaels Catholic Church, and the Catholic Women's League. Kay was a talented artist, who's creativity and ambition to learn were endless. She had an array of creative hobbies including spinning and dying yarn, knitting, quilting, rug hooking, and sewing. Her hands were seldom idle.

The family wish to thank the WRHA Palliative program and the staff of 3E at Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion.

A Requiem Mass and celebration of Kay's life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I remember Kay from both the Labrador Club and as a rug hooker. She had such a vivacious personality and so talented and creative. Condolences from the ladies at the Prairie Edge Rug Hooking Guild in Beausejour. - Posted by: Val Jackson (Friend) on: Jan 05, 2025

  • Condolences to all of Kay's family as you grieve the loss of Kay in your lives. I learned a lot about the family over years of conversations on the golf course and over lunches at Tim Hortons. I first met Kay at AquaFit classes at Concordia Pool and invited her to join the Harbour View Ladies Golf League. I so missed seeing her twice a week for golfing when health issues forced her to quit. I know you, the family, will find comfort in the the wonderful memories she has left for you to cherish. She did, indeed, live a full and rewarding life with so many accomplishments. Memories of her are in my thoughts at this sad time. In sympathy, Shirley Augustine - Posted by: Shirley Augustine (friend and golf partner) on: Dec 15, 2024

  • I met Kay when she came to one of my rug hooking workshops. She was a remarkable craftsperson and a continual inspiration. And fun! Our trip to Nova Scotia together to pay homage to rug hooker Deanne Fitzpatrick was a beautiful mix of laughter and learning. Her hand-dyed fibre stash brought tears of longing every time I saw it and I still treasure her knitted mittens and socks from her handspun wool. She was a treasure in so many ways. I loved our spirited political discussions (we were mostly on the same page) and our too infrequent visits. Though I hadn’t seen Kay for a few years, I thought of her often and our last phone call was a promise to visit soon. I so wish we’d managed that. My condolences to your family at the loss of your lovely, talented, smart as a whip no nonsense Kay. - Posted by: Nancy Hall (friend and fellow fibre artist) on: Dec 14, 2024

  • Our sincerest Condolences to all of Kay’s family. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. We have fond memories of Kay & Robert — neighbors in Oakbank. What a lovely couple!! And we shared a love of canary breeding, having purchased some lovely German rollers from Robert. - Posted by: Henry & Evelyn Pankratz (Friend, neighbour) on: Dec 14, 2024
