It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of dear Father, Husband and Friend, Maurice, who died peacefully and was welcomed into heaven after a long battle with dementia, surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 42 years, Lorraine; sons, Rob (Holly) and Dan (Lacey); daughter Alyson (Trevor), grandchildren, Millie, Remy, Elsie, Sterling and Forrest. He also leaves to mourn his sisters, Mona (Lorne), Valerie (Brian), brother Patrick (Gaylene); and his dog Rosie. Maurice was predeceased by his father Marcel and his mother Lucie.
Maurice was born and lived his entire life in Winnipeg. He came from humble beginnings in St. Vital and in his youth loved playing cards, math and learning. He was a dedicated student and learner. Maurice graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce. His working career spanned over 40 years including time at Federated Insurance, where he met his wife, Lorraine, BMO, Nesbitt Burns and CIBC/Wood Gundy - developing many special personal and professional relationships that remained with him throughout his life.
Maurice and Lorraine were married in 1982 and spent a spectacular 42 years together and were able to raise nurture and grow a wonderful family in south Winnipeg. Maurice was a dedicated family man. His biggest loves were spending time with family (particularly summer camping or road trips - especially to Gilbert Plains), and coaching his kids in sport - particularly soccer (where he coached his daughter Alyson for many years) and hockey. He was a proud hockey dad - always the number one supporter of his sons - particularly Dan - during his career with the Winnipeg South Blues and Regina Cougars. He was also a dedicated pepere to his grandkids and uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Maurice was equally at home with a good book and a glass of wine as he was in social settings and with others. Always with a quick wit and able to tell a quick joke or story, Maurice was beloved by all of those around him. He cherished rounds of golf with friends and golf trips (even though the score didn't always go his way). He was a proud curler and a member of Pembina Curling Club for over 20 years. He loved spending time with his brother in laws (the so called "schwaggers" -Gene, Lawrence and Alan), as well as golf friends and colleagues, Doug, Merv and many others that accompanied his curling trips to Bemidji.
Maurice instilled on his kids and family the principles of hard work, love, compassion and equanimity. He was always level-headed, calm, approachable and could be relied upon to give helpful everlasting life advice on just about any topic.
Despite being diagnosed with a slowly debilitating illness, Maurice always carried with him a gentle touch and a trademark warm smile. He radiated warm gentle kindness that touched and permeated all.
Don't cry for my leaving
I am not leaving
I am arriving at eternal love
Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen unheard, always near,
Still loved and still very dear
Special thanks to all the staff of tower 3 at Deer Lodge, particularly Vanessa, Lora, Shelly, Ferdinand, Carolyn, Heather, Leah and many others. The love and caring you showed Maurice were a true gift to our family and this world. Also special thanks to all friends and family who helped provide a kind, patient and compassionate approach to Maurice's condition over the last few years.
As per Maurice's wishes, Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life is to follow at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada or Deer Lodge Hospital Foundation.

My sincerest condolences to Lorraine and family. I've reflected on what to say for a long time. I'm still at a loss for words. I must settle on the song by Tina Turner (sorry Mo, not the Bee Gees) "SIMPLY THE BEST" I'll always miss you buddy, best friend and best person. ALWAYS!!! - Posted by: Mervin Dahl (Friend) on: Jan 18, 2025

So sad to hear of Mo’s passing. He was a kind and gentle man with a sneaky sense of humour that I appreciated. Met him while working at Burns Fry in 1993, and Curled against him at both Wildewood and Pembina. Shared many post game drinks and stories win or lose. Here's to you sir, you will be missed by all. - Posted by: Rob Duncan (Friend) on: Dec 28, 2024

Sincere Condolences to Lorraine and family. Maurice was a very nice and kind person. I have good memories of him as a young child. Maurice always had the time to say hello and chat when I spent summer holidays at Tante and Oncle with my cousin. He was no different as an adult. My sympathies also to my cousins.
