GARRY ALLEN PAUL FERNIUK

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Garry Allen Paul Ferniuk on December 1, 2024, at the age of 79. He fought a long and hard journey to the very end with his wife and best friend of 56 years by his side.

Garry’s “day job” for over 30 years was as an educator with most of those years spent as a mathematics teacher at Glenlawn Collegiate. He had an impact on generations of students and always enjoyed being recognized decades later by many of them.

In retirement he and mom spent winters in Yuma, Arizona but he was always anxiously awaiting the time to return to the place nearest to his heart, Minaki. There he spent his days building, fixing, improving, re-building and maintaining every inch of the property. He loved the peace and tranquility but even more so the time spent with friends and family. At Minaki he proved he was a teacher well beyond the classroom imparting his wisdom on broad ranging topics. His children, Lisa (Ken), Leney (Jim) and Paul (Chelsea) will forever remember the life lessons he gave us.

Grandpa had a special and unique relationship with each of his grandchildren. His love of music and the art of puttering will live on with them. Matt (Carleigh), Melissa (Alex) and Colton will remember his guidance and teachings over many years. This past summer he was thrilled to meet Great-Grandson Mason. Rest knowing that through us, he will know you too.

Garry’s passing leaves a hole in all of us and especially in the heart of his partner in life, Leslie. As an inseparable pair for 56 years they raised a tight knit and loving family, enjoying so many adventures together along the way. As she begins to navigate this next journey without him, she will do so with strength and courage, drawing upon all that they learned in their life together.

Rest in Peace Dad.

You will be forever missed.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Garry was math department head when I was hired as a young teacher at Glenlawn in 1988. He was friendly and welcoming and set a great example with concepts of shared workload and making decisions as a team. Friendship was part of the deal. Lunches at the Monte on in-service days with the math crew are some of my fondest memories. Garry's retirement speech was the best I have ever heard. Thanks for everything Garry. - Posted by: Ken Thoroski (Friend and colleague) on: Dec 16, 2024
