EDWARD BRYCE ARCHIBALD (TED) WYMAN

Ted Wyman was born in Brandon on June 11, 1966 and passed away on November 9, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Anna and father Herbert and is survived by his daughter Emily (Em) and son Christopher (Chris).  Born in Brandon but raised in Winnipeg, Ted attended Kelvin High School in River Heights.

Ted was a giant of a man with a smile to match.  Ted loved life and, most of all, adored his daughter Em and son Chris, who were sources of immense pride for him. Ted provided unwavering support and wise counsel to his vast network of friends and colleagues.  He often played guitar and sang at parties or by campfire at Loni Beach, a place he treasured.

Ted was a legendary journalist who gained the respect of his colleagues and the athletes he covered. He began his professional career at the Brandon Sun in 1992 before joining the Moose Jaw Times-Herald from 1993 to 1996. He returned to Brandon in 1996 and spent the next seven years there. He became a sports copy editor at the Winnipeg Sun in 2003 and was promoted to sports editor three years later. Ted loved his work and was passionate about the Bombers, the Grey Cup and curling. Ted authored the book Ice Gold which offered an insider’s view of Canada’s double gold medal curling feat at the 2014 Winter Olympics, an event he covered in Sochi. Ted was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2018.

Ted’s life and career took him around the world. His easy-going nature, warm smile, and welcoming demeanor provided countless experiences with locals and fellow journalists. Ted made friends everywhere he went. This may be the most notable of his many gifts.

Thank you to Ted’s longtime partner Kim Fedick for supporting and caring for Ted throughout his illness. The family would also like to thank the staff at HSC and Cancer Care Manitoba.

A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at The Pyramid Cabaret, 176 Fort Street, Winnipeg at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 10th.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I had the privilege of playing with and against Ted in our Sponge Hockey league in River Heights at SJF. Ted was always the gentleman on and off the ice, both as a rival and a teammate. I have many fond memories of Ted before, during, and post game, where there was great comradery and friendships made. Sometimes talking amongst ourselves well into the wee hours. Cheers Ted…you will be missed! - Posted by: Bill Sharpe (Friend/team mate) on: Jan 07, 2025

  • I got to know Ted through the CFL. I host the pressbox in Toronto as well as at the Grey Cup, wherever it is played. I also served as the admin assistant for the FRC for a number of years. As a result, I saw Ted a lot through the seasons. He always had a smile on his face, and was quick with a comment, good or bad about the game he was covering. I was honoured to be asked to put together an "In Memoriam" spot for him at the Grey Cup this year. He was/is missed by all of us. - Posted by: CORINA MARK (Friend and co-worker) on: Jan 05, 2025

  • My oldest friend. The cottage backing on to the Wyman bonfire I had the best seats in Loni Beach, the crackling fire, Ted’s foghorn voice, serenading the moon. When I think of Ted I hear music. - Posted by: Geir Olson (Friend) on: Dec 22, 2024

  • I had the great pleasure of playing sponge hockey with Ted for many years in the River Heights Sponge Hockey League at Sir John Franklin. Ted was a true sportsman, invariably positive, and generous with smiles and laughter. He had a quick wit, and was a font of wisdom in his area of expertise (the sporting world). He was a great guy, and he will be sorely missed by all. It was an honour to be your SpongeBobs teammate. ❤️🍻🏒🏈🥌📰 - Posted by: Brian Sharpe (Friend & SpongeBobs teammate ) on: Dec 21, 2024

  • Ted was my uncle and he officiated my wedding. I’m always going to remember his boisterous nature, the breakfast feasts he would cook on Sundays and of course, him playing his guitar and singing around bonfires. Anyone who wants a sports statistic is going to have to look them up now, since our living, breathing sports encyclopedia is gone. There was nobody who had a better memory for sports stats! Love you uncle <3 we all miss you a lot. - Posted by: Anne Wyman (Niece ) on: Dec 21, 2024
