LEOKADIA GRUENING

Leokadia Gruening, May 30, 1929, to December 17, 2024, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 with her family by her side.

Leokadia was born in Kuti Salesie, Poland. She and her family later moved to Germany, where she helped her parents on their farm and cared for her younger siblings. Leokadia met her husband, Jakob, in Germany, where they married in 1953. Later that year, they immigrated to Canada and started their family. While in Canada, she worked as a housekeeper and at the old Concordia Hospital as a cook, seamstress, and housekeeper.

She loved to read and was an avid knitter. Her knitting was not just a hobby but a way to spread warmth and joy. She made scarves, hats and mittens all year long for the Christmas Cheer Board, bringing comfort and warmth to those in need, until her declining eyesight no longer allowed her to.

Leokadia has been a part of the Bethania family since her husband Jakob moved into Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home in 2008. For the past 5 years, she has made her home at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.

Leokadia's family thanks Bethania's staff for their unwavering kindness, love, and compassionate care, which made her final years comfortable and peaceful.

She was predeceased by her husband Jakob. Leokadia is survived by her children, Helga, Peter and Christine (Rob), and grandchildren, Monika, Matthew and Emily. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Glen Eden, with interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
