CLIFFORD BERNHARDT

April 17, 1941 - December 27, 2024

Dad dealt with increasing dementia in his last years but it was a broken heart that eventually took him from us.

After losing his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Bev, in 2022, his enthusiasm for life waned. He stopped eating and was weak. His continual refusal to eat in the hospital granted him his final wish, to be with his "Bevelyn."

The many memories of dad (Papa) will be treasured by his daughter Sandy Motkaluk (Richard); son Darren (Jenn Still); grandchildren, Steven, Riley, Maryssa and Myranda Motkaluk, Abby and Ben Bernhardt; and many nieces and nephews.

Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg and spent his entire life in the Elmwood-East Kildonan area, which he fiercely loved. He was the youngest of nine siblings, many who also spent their lives in the neighbourhood. Dad was the last of them.

He was predeceased by his father Phillip in 1957, and mother Maria in 1977, as well as his seven sisters and one brother.

Dad and mom met at Elmwood High School and built a simple, happy life in a modest home. Dad spent a short time working as a travelling salesman for Arnold Bros. Transport, a family he was very fond of, before shifting to Air Canada Cargo, where he spent 33 years.

A private interment will happen at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery when his remains will be reunited with mom's in the niche they share. The one inscribed "Together Forever."

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Darren so sorry to learn of your dad's passing. I have so many fond memories of getting together with Cliff + Bev particularly at our cottages at Winnipeg Beach. It's comforting to know they're together again in spirit. Ron - Posted by: Ron Grunsten (Friend) on: Jan 16, 2025

  • Cliff was a very genuine, helpful, and friendly neighbour. We moved onto Fleming in the 70’s and Cliff and Bev, our neighbours across the back lane, made us very welcome in the neighbourhood. With a ready smile, willingness to lend an hand, and humorous stories, Cliff will be warmly remembered. Our condolences to Darren and Sandra and your families. - Posted by: Barry and Ingrid Esselmont (Former neighbours) on: Jan 13, 2025

  • So sorry to hear of Cliff’s passing. No matter how the operation was going at Air Canada Cargo, Cliff’s sense of humour would bring down the tension. I worked with Cliff from 1970 to 1973 until I moved to another department. It was my pleasure to know & work with Cliff. Cliff, May God hold you in his arms and give you the comfort you deserve. Until we meet again, Ron - Posted by: Ron MacKenzie (Work mate) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • I am so sorry for all of our losses but happy Cliff is able to be with his beloved Bev. They were so much fun and getting together with the two of them guaranteed a great time with gut retching laughs. I remember one time when they came to our house and Cliff said wait until you hear what Bev did and he said it with a sparkle in his eye, She was off to the hairdresser and couldn't feel her feet and proceeded to destroy the neighbour's garage. Bev piped up and said the guy was happy he said he needed a new garage. I love being helpful. I will miss them forever. They were so proud of their children and grandchildren. Never missing a moment to brag about them. R.I.P Cliff and Ben. you're together again, - Posted by: Bert and Roslyn Sauewttw (bowling buds) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • Always enjoyed my time spent with Cliff (and Bev) at Rossmere Lane in the different bowling leagues that they both enjoyed over the years. My mother was so pleased to be placed on teams with Cliff and Bev over the years. The tribute to Bev held at the lanes will always be an event that I remember with fondness. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Jamie Newton (Bowling Friend) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • Condolences to your family, we were neighbors on Prince Rupert many, many years ago, your parents were wonderful people. Debbie Wrobleski & family. - Posted by: Debbie wrobleski (neighbor) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • My sincere condolences to Sandy, Darren and all family on your loss. Uncle Cliff has definitely been welcomed by many especially his beloved ❤️ RIP, hugs to all. - Posted by: Lisa Bernhardt (Niece) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • Condolences to Sandra and Darren, your dad was definitely a true Winnipegger. A lifelong Big Blue fan and jets lover. I will miss the many arguments we had about our political difference, all in fun though. The one thing I adored about your father, he was a strong Winnipegger and Manitoban. Stood up for what he believed in, and in these days, that is often not the case. Many fun times spent with your father and mother, they will both be missed, and Cliff, I am still not voting NDP. Rest in peace buddy. - Posted by: Kelly Hicks (friend and co worker) on: Jan 11, 2025
