DR. DAVID (DAVE) WILLIAM EASTON

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. David Easton, a friend to hundreds, mentor to dozens, and admired and respected by everyone who encountered him.

Dr. Dave passed late in the evening on Thursday, December 19, 2024, after a courageous six-year battle with Liver/Pancreatic cancer. He passed in his Grace ICU ward, surrounded by family, friends and many doctors holding his hands throughout the final moments. Dave was born March 30, 1970, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dave is survived by his parents, William and Kristine Easton, his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Marnie Easton, niece Sarah and Josiah Herms, nephew Noah Easton, and grandnephew Oliver Herms.

From a very early age Dave knew he wanted to be a doctor; he had focused on medicine since he was a teenager. He graduated medical school and began Emergency Medicine Residency by his mid-20s. Dave completed Residency and ICU Fellowship by the age of 32 with some elective time in a Toronto hospital ER as well. Dave ultimately devoted much of his life to his love of medicine and care for patients as an Emergency/ICU physician here in Winnipeg. Dave was the Medical Director of the ICU departments at the Concordia Hospital and the ICU/ER at the Grace Hospital for most of his career. Dave led improvements in standards and quality during his various roles and brought countless innovations and positive changes to the Critical Care program in Manitoba. At the University of Manitoba, Dave taught the practice of medicine to many young physicians, role modelling excellent practice and kind, compassionate care. Dave also worked with Lifeflight to fly into remote communities, and even internationally, providing healthcare anywhere and anytime he was called. He found a need overseas and spent time volunteering on a medical mission to Vietnam, providing some necessary care and then donating a whole lot of bikes and even funding a ventilator to the local community. The passion to serve in the medical community was evident up to a few weeks before he passed as Dave was still working shifts at the Grace Hospital ICU. His dedication to his medical practice was second to none.

Aside from his work, Dave had many passions in life. He loved cooking, baking bread, travelling around the world on photography adventure tours, taking late night drives for astrophotography, and enjoyed downtime with his friends. Arguably though, Dave most enjoyed the time he spent relaxing at home with his two pups, Kali and Sammy.

It is truly with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Dave. He will be missed by many, and his lasting legacy in the medical community will continue to ripple positivity and innovation throughout his colleagues around the city.

There will be a funeral service in his memory: Sunday, January 26, 2025, 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. *This is open to all who would like to come and celebrate Dave's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation in Dave's memory.

  • One month had passed since Dave, the Great Soul, had departed us but I still find it hard to believe..i wish it were a bad dream. He was such a nice person and was always happy to help the patients in the ward, in the ER, no matter what time of the day or night it was. Most of the time I would meet him at the Doctors' Lounge at Grace, only a few times we had met each other at SBGH during the Covid Period. “I will always treasure his face with the warmest smile". We will miss him a lot and my heartfelt condolences to Dave's family. - Posted by: Amiya R Chakraborty (Internal Medicine Physician, St Boniface and Grace Hospital) on: Jan 19, 2025

  • I truly enjoyed working with Dave. As a dietitian working in ICU at Concordia, I found myself often asking him questions, debating new research and he always took the time to teach and debate. He had a great sense of humor and often teased me. I was excited to see him again in the ICU during my brief time working at Grace Hospital. He will be missed, never forgotten ❤️ - Posted by: Chelsa Marcell (CH ICU ❤️) on: Jan 18, 2025
