ROBERT (BOB) HOWARD SUTHERLAND

April 28, 1933 - January 19, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Robert (Bob) Howard Sutherland, aged 91, on January 19, 2025, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Bob was born to Donald Sutherland and Blanche Pelland and grew up alongside his siblings, Roy, Ronald, George and Sheila.

On February 14, 1953, Bob married Shirley - the love of his life. Together, they built a remarkable life together, raising four boys: Gordon, Robert, Wayne, and Brian. Bob adored his 15 grandchildren, his numerous great-grandchildren, and ever-growing number of great-great-grandchildren.

Bob’s life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and a deep love for family and community. Coming from humble beginnings, he held a variety of jobs before taking a bold step to purchase Clark's Upholstery on Lorette Avenue. Over 40 plus years, Bob and Shirley worked diligently in the upholstery business, teaching his children the trade and helping countless families restore and beautify their homes. An astute and compassionate entrepreneur, Bob became a respected landlord, owning and managing up to 10 rental properties in Fort Rouge and St. Vital. Known for his kindness and generosity; he rarely raised rent, often reducing rent for tenants who were struggling financially.

Bob was a man of many passions. He delighted in raising and trading pigeons with fellow enthusiasts and could often be found tending to his beloved garden, where he cultivated vibrant flowers and cherished quiet moments by the campfire in the forested backyard of his Egerton Road home which he and Shirley shared for over 70 years. A true socialite, Bob treasured his large circle of friends, frequently the center of lively gatherings at the Norwood Hotel and the St. Boniface Legion.

Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and community. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at a future date, where Shirley and family will have an opportunity to honour his memory with friends and associates.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jocelyn House.

Forever loved, never forgotten.

  • My sincere condolences to Shirley and family. I remember when Bob would cone over to Mike & Alice’s home. He and Mike would talk about Mike’s pigeons and then they would leave to go have a beer. Bob was very witty and would make me laugh when telling a joke. Bob was a very kind man. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Yolande Pestaluky (Friend/acquaintance through his friends Mike & Alice Pestaluky) on: Feb 13, 2025

  • The Sutherland and Payettes grew up side by side on Egerton Rd. for nearly 20 yrs. We have fond memories of those years, and are saddened by the passing of Bob.
