CYNTHIA MANSWELL

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cynthia Manswell on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at the age of 89. Cynthia was born in Trinidad and was preceded by her father John, her mother Theresa, sisters Grace and Phyllis and brothers Cecil and George and her son Cory. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth (Lennix), her son Kevin, brother Rannie and many nieces and nephews.

She obtained her BA and BEd. From the University of Manitoba. Prior to coming to Manitoba, she was an elementary school teacher. In Winnipeg she taught Language Arts and French at the Junior High level at Gordon Bell and Hugh John Macdonald. She also taught English and Literature to Junior High students at the Riyadh International Community School for five years while being a resident in Riyadh. In Riyadh she also tutored some female members of the royal family.

Cynthia was always involved in community affairs. She was one of the founding members of the Caribbean Canadian Association of Winnipeg, the Congress of Black Women, Manitoba Chapter and was also a Board Member and vice-president of the Immigrant Women's Association of Manitoba (WAM).

She co-founded and hosted, with other hosts, "Caribbean Echoes" on Shaw community TV channel which ran for 19 years. On the compound in Riyadh where she lived, she ran a weekly radio program (Ring My Bells) interviewing both adults and children who lived on the compound.

She was involved with All Saints Anglican Church where she had been a congregant since arriving in Winnipeg serving on different committees including Vestry and Altar Guild. She also served as the People's Warden.

Cynthia may be gone but not forgotten. Her warmth, humour and infectious laugh will always be with us.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, corner of Broadway and Osborne on Saturday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers kindly make a contribution to a charity or to the Congress of Black Women, Manitoba Chapter.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My condolences to the Manswell family. Mrs. Manswell gave me the opportunity to shine every summer at the Cari Cana pavilion at an early age. My passion for dance stemmed from practicing on Saturday’s, then learning to assist the limbo dancer day after day brought all of us joy in the summers. We had unforgettable moments practicing and performing at Grant Park High School. The sounds of the Caribbean echoed through the hallways at Folklorama. Mrs. Manswell taught us discipline, folklore, and a love of soca music. She will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Beverlee Cooke (Mentor) on: Mar 18, 2025

  • If roses grow in heaven, dear Lord please pick a bunch fo her. Please put them in my dear friend Cynthia's arms and tell her that they are from her friends. Tell her we love her and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while. Remembering her beautiful smile, her kindness and the jokes she shared are easy. But there are aches within our hearts because we will miss her so badly. R.I.P. My dear friend! - Posted by: Norma Walker-Dickens (Dear Friend) on: Feb 19, 2025

  • I met Cynthia in University at United College. After graduation, we both went into teaching but lost touch. Then, in 1978, I went to the week long orientation Bell Canada hosted for spouses of those joining their team in Riyadh, SA. Who should I see but Cynthia and our friendship resumed. Cynthia was so easy to like. She had the best laugh and was always caring. When our husbands ended their contracts & we returned to Canada, again we lost touch. I am saddened to read that a special friend has passed. I will remember her w a smile. - Posted by: Maggie Carr (Classmate United College, friend in Riyadh, SA) on: Feb 18, 2025
