METRO (MATT) BURYM

October 29, 1931 – February 5, 2025

Peacefully, at the age of 93, Dad passed away to join his beloved wife Norma.

Metro was born on the farm near Hyas, Saskatchewan in 1931, the youngest of seven children. He was the last of his generation. Born in the Great Depression, his life was a real rag to riches story. He left the farm to go to high school and continued on to achieve a Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education. He had a rewarding 31-year teaching career in St. Vital teaching Industrial Arts to almost every student in the division during his years at Glenlawn and Darwin Schools.

He met Mom at a dance in the fall of 1959. They quickly fell in love and he married the love of his life in May 1960. Together they had a long, happy marriage of 47 years until Mom passed away in 2007. They built their dream house on the banks of the Seine River in old St. Vital and raised their three children there. They enjoyed many years at the cottage at Grindstone on Lake Winnipeg.

He is survived by his three children: Marianne (Ron), Mark, and Craig (Lisa). He will be missed by his nine grandchildren: Abby, Brock, Jacob, Ryan, Eric, Owen, Julia, Caden, and Charlotte.

Always someone who could not sit down, he enjoyed his passions of gardening and woodworking throughout his life, and especially during his many years of retirement. He generously shared his bountiful harvest and his many handmade wood projects, many of which are in the homes of those who loved him.

Special thanks to the staff of Vista Park Lodge, where he lived the last few years of his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 11, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street, Winnipeg. A private family interment has already taken place.

You will always be in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. We love you and miss you.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Our deepest condolences to Marianne, Mark, Craig and families! Alex, our dad, was Uncle Matt’s older brother. We grew up on Dad’s small farm near the homestead where the first generation of the Buryms lived. We always looked forward to Uncle Matt’s visits, when as a teacher, he was on summer holidays. During his younger single years, it was special when he visited with Dad, mom and us, “the four little girls.” We have some special memories and experiences from many years ago with Uncle Matt. Gloria and Liz remember that it was Uncle Matt who gave them their first box of paints. It was through Uncle Matt that our parents bought our first black and white TV which was a used big cabinet style type. It was sent out by train to Sturgis for pick up. Our Dad, thought the world of his youngest brother and admired his accomplishments in life. Through Uncle Matt, Dad saw the value and importance of getting a good education. Our Dad always stressed that we should get a good education to have a better life! He instilled that in us, and we in turn passed that on to our children. Uncle Matt blazed the trail for us from our little farm to where we are today. He inspired us to step out into the world, to believe in ourselves and to follow our dreams without any limitations. Family was always important to Uncle Matt. We have some fond memories of our family reunions and cherish the family history book. For Vi, spending summers with the McGrath family, always included visits to Uncle Matt and Auntie Norma’s place. It was special when Uncle Matt was the one who walked Vi down the aisle on her wedding day. We have fond memories of Uncle Matt sharing jokes, riddles and challenging puzzles for us to solve. We still have change purses and heart shapes that were hand made and stitched by him. It warms our hearts to see our children and grandchildren with them now! Uncle Matt, you will be remembered and missed for the special times that we had with you. Rest in peace. Submitted on behalf of Alex’s daughters: (Gloria, Elizabeth, Carol & Violet) - Posted by: Violet (Niece) on: Mar 09, 2025

  • My sincere condolences to Craig, Mark, Marianne and their families in the loss of their father and grandfather. I have so many fond memories of my Uncle Matt. The card games I had with my mother, Uncle Matt and Auntie Norma were memorable. There was the never-ending challenge to beat uncle Matt, which was near impossible. As mentioned by my sister Sharon McGrath Uncle’s many talents live in my home, yard and yes my purse with my yellow change purse. Whenever there was a family wedding the newly weds could expect a unique rolling pin and possibly a sewing hassock which Uncle made. They are very treasured gifts. He was a wonderful Uncle and will be missed. Lynne Geikie (McGrath) niece - Posted by: Lynne Geikie(McGrath) (Niece) on: Feb 27, 2025

  • My condolences to Mark, Marianne, Craig and all the grandchildren. Uncle Matt was always so much fun whenever we would see him (especially at our Grandma's). His little woodworking jokes and puzzles were such a staple in my childhood. I still have a Canada Goose planter and some duck lawn ornaments in my yard. - Posted by: Devon (Great Nephew) on: Feb 22, 2025

  • My most sincere condolences to Mark, Marianne, Craig and their families on the loss of their father and grandfather. My memories...Before Uncle Matt & Auntie Norma had their own children me & my three sisters were treated like their kids. We benefited from their kindness & generosity through road trips to the family homestead in Danbury Sask. or to enjoy the skating feats of the Ice Capades or to see the performers of the Shrine Circus. Growing up they were part of our lives; at family dinners celebrating Christmas, New Years day, Easter, & Thanksgiving. Our visits to their home included tobogganing down this impressive slide in the backyard during the winter or canoeing on the river in the summer. Now I look around my home & yard & I see reminders of Uncle Matt...stained glass birds, change purses & key chains in my home & wooden Canada geese planters & butterflies in my yard. Also, I have a wooden step stool which I'm quite sure could hold an elephant. Rest in peace dear Uncle. - Posted by: Sharon E. McGrath (niece) on: Feb 22, 2025
