DENNIS KAI CHEUNG IP

Dennis Kai Cheung Ip, our beloved father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the age of 80 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, surrounded by his family.

He was predeceased by his treasured mother Foon Woo Ip and father Yueng Sang; siblings, Fook Ying (Kan Ching) and Kai Shun (Wei Yu); as well as his dogs, Lucky, Tiny, Rocky, and Bobby whom he adored. He is lovingly remembered by his children, John (Jenn), Katherine May (Brooks), and Andy (Emily); his grandchildren, Liam, Ethan, and Owen; his siblings, Samuel Kai Sum (Julie Pui Hing), Sui Ying (Lam Yeung), Bing Ying (Kam Cheung), Kit Ying (Kok Gui) and Mun Ying (Ying Ching); as well as numerous nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends. He is also survived by the mothers of his children, Zenaida Ip (mother of John and Katherine May) and Jin Qiu Liang (mother of Andy).

Dennis was born in Macau, China, on October 6, 1944, and spent his formative years in Hong Kong before relocating to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the 1970s. His talent for repairing machinery and electronics, coupled with his unwavering willingness to assist others, earned him the respect and gratitude of his coworkers. He was also quick to lend a hand to friends and family in their times of need, guided by his generosity and kind-hearted nature.

His children will forever cherish memories of family fishing and camping trips, hockey practices, soccer games where he volunteered, 7UP slurpee treats after every grade school softball game, friendly mahjong games he almost always won, and how, though he could not cook, he showed love through sharing delicious meals. They fondly remember his adoration for his grandchildren and how his face would light up whenever they were around. Making his grandchildren smile brought him great joy.

Dennis was raised by an incredibly strong, compassionate, and resilient woman, known affectionately as Mama, who had a profound love for her grandchildren. He received enduring support from his siblings, who looked after him, even from afar, through to his final days of illness. He devoted himself to his family through long work hours to provide for them and ensure a better future for his children, and each family member held significant value in his life, despite his reserved nature in expressing those sentiments. Throughout his life, marked by hardship and adversity, he instilled in his children the importance of helping others and ensuring inclusivity for those who felt left out. He often found it difficult to ask for what he needed but would be quick to anticipate the needs of others.

Our family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care Dad received from staff at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg and at The Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre - thank you for your loving and generous care of our dad.
