Jim Collins died peacefully in his sleep at Lion’s Manor in Winnipeg on March 19, 2025.
He is survived by his wife Rhoda and children, Lynn, Joanne, George and Bill, plus seven grandchildren.
Born in Winnipeg on May 5, 1930, to George Collins and Nell (Martin), Jim built a successful career in heavy construction, moving earth and blasting rock throughout Canada’s western provinces and Northern Territories. In 1984, Jim adapted proven Canadian ice-road building techniques for use in the construction of a permanent ice-runway needed by the British Antarctic Survey in the Antarctic. This was one of the most interesting and memorable adventures of his life, requiring travel through New York, London, Buenos Aires, Punta Arenas and the Falkland Islands.
Jim's work required long periods of time 'away' but he was very fond of returning home for family holidays where lively dinner table discussions covered history, politics, foreign affairs and Winnipeg's legendary eateries. At home and in camp he was often cozied-up in PJ's enjoying a good book. Jim's unique character will not soon be forgotten and there is a lifetime of great stories to remember him by. His family is deeply appreciative of the wonderful staff at Lions Manor, who took such kind and expert care of him in the five years he lived there.
Rest in Peace

Sincere condolences to the Collins family. Jim was one of the most knowledgeable person I've ever had the pleasure to talk to. He certainly was a friendly and likable gentleman and will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace James. - Posted by: Paul Dufault (Friend) on: Mar 29, 2025
