HELEN SENKIW
Helen Senkiw passed away on March 28, 2025, at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at the age of 97.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Marc, daughter Margaret (Halabura), beloved grandson Michael, sister Sally Kalinski, brother Peter Konowalchuk, and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Jacob Anton (Jack) Senkiw and by her sisters, Mary Ladobruk, Pauline Senkiw, Ann Makar, and Sophie Stokes.
Helen was born in Pansy, Manitoba in 1927 to Emily and Michael Konowalchuk. After her marriage to Jack in 1949, Helen was whisked away from the family farm to Snow Lake, Manitoba where her life as a mother and homemaker began. She kept the home fires burning for her family in Red Lake, ON, Chibougamau, PQ, Newcastle, NB, Saskatoon, SK, and Yellowknife, NWT. She and Jack eventually retired to Steinbach, Manitoba. During her time back on home soil she enjoyed gatherings with her siblings and their families, especially picnics at Sandilands Park. After Jack’s death in 2001, Helen moved to Saskatoon to be close to her daughter and grandson. Of all the places she lived, the Canadian north was where she loved best where she enjoyed the outdoor life. Helen could do anything she put her hand to; she was a skilled at, and enjoyed, gardening, cooking, and needlework. However, it was her sense of justice and compassion for the vulnerable that were the unsung qualities of her character. She will be missed. Vichnaya Pamyat, memory eternal.
Helen will be buried alongside her husband, Jack. A graveside service will be held on May 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at the Steinbach Heritage Cemetery on Loewen Boulevard, Steinbach, MB.
Helen’s family would like to express their thanks and appreciation for the care and friendship offered to her by the staff at Porteous and Stensrud Lodges, in Saskatoon. Also, thank you to Mourning Glory - Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel in Saskatoon, and Birchwood Funeral Chapel, in Steinbach, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army.
