Elaine Sue Obee, 82, of Winnipeg, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 30, 2025. Born April 10, 1942 to Dwight and Etta Van Winkle.
Sue was raised in Bladensburg, Ohio and was the first woman from her town to attend university. She studied mathematics at Muskingum College and fulfilled her dream of returning home to teach at East Knox High School.
In 1968, she married Doug and together they ran the family business in Sioux Narrows, Ontario until 1989, building a life rooted in faith and community. Sue was active in Lake of the Woods Chapel and helped lead the Sioux Narrows Arts Festival. After moving to Winnipeg in 1978, she became involved in volunteering and Atlantic Garden City United Church (AGCUC).
Sue later worked as an Audio-Visual Education Librarian for the United Church of Canada, combining her love of teaching and theology.
She and Doug were more than husband and wife - they were best friends. Together they loved road trips, especially to visit family in Ohio and California. After Doug’s passing in 2013, Sue remained deeply engaged at AGCUC including serving on the Board.
Sue is survived by her daughter Anne Obee (Jason Swindle); siblings, Tim (Kris), Jim (Kat), and Jane Van Winkle; sister-in-law Margaret Obee; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends and her cherished grand-dog Ramses. She was predeceased by her sister Ann; her parents; husband Doug; brothers-in-law, Ron and Gary Obee and Tom Van Winkle and sister-in-law Cathie Obee.
A service will be held at Atlantic Garden City United Church on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Don Schau. Interment will take place at a later date at Mount Zion Cemetery in Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Atlantic Garden City United Church.

Dear Anne...I am stunned. I was thinking of your Mom just yesterday and thought, "I better call, we hadn't talked, since before Christmas of 24. I just called her number, not in service, I entered the number again, same. So I came and sat before my lap top. Within minutes I read this sad news. We always had such great conversations. Anne you will remember me by my dog Maggie Mae. How your Dad loved her. Anne my profound condolences to you and family. I will miss her deeply......Blessings Maxine Mcinnis - Posted by: Maxine McInnis (Friend and Neighbour) on: Aug 27, 2025

Dear Anne I was so saddened to learn of your mom’s sudden passing. What I remember most - in addition to her beautiful smile was her love of gardening and all the different herbal plants she said she had planted - many of which I had never heard of. And of course how very proud she was of you May her memory be a blessing. Aunty Roz - Posted by: Aunty Roz (Aunt) on: May 22, 2025

I met Sue through her friend Marilyn Waterman at AGCUC. They were a mischief pair together, and coerced me into helping move the United Church House library from 120 Maryland to Norwood United Church. We had many good laughs over the goofs we made in packing and marking. It was a fine relationship with the three of us getting together often. After Marilyn's passing 2019.06.17, Sue and I kept up an animated electronic conversation. She was a fine lady, with a good heart, and a commitment to her faith and to her family. I will miss her deeply. Love and condolences to all the family, and to AGCUC friends. Gerald Brown - Posted by: Gerald Brown (Friend) on: May 12, 2025
