Frederick Hugh Robinson of Tilston, MB passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on May 16, 2025 at the age of 94.
Fred was born on September 22, 1930 on the family’s homestead in the R.M. of Brenda near Medora, MB to Hugh and May (Sage) Robinson. Fred was the third of eight children.
Fred grew up working on the farm with his family. When Fred was a young man, he went to work on a farm near Waskada, MB. While there he met a young woman working in the farmhouse, Ruth Kurtz, who he fell for. The two married on November 2, 1957 and moved to the Tilston area where they bought a farm.
The couple was soon blessed with their first child, Hugh, their second child, Wanda, came along not long after, followed by Eddie and then Rosalie. Fred’s days were filled running the farm, while Ruth cared for the household and children. Years later Fred’s grandchildren came along, who he cared for very much.
Fred enjoyed farming and taking care of the land and livestock. He farmed well into his 90s running the combine until the land was rented out, he would then take a ride in the combine each year with the Jacobson’s who rented the land. He cared deeply for family’s cows (even though he was allergic) and always had a soft spot for the farm dogs and cats. Fred loved keeping a garden and would spend summers caring for his raspberry and potato patches, even planting his last potato crop just a week before he passed.
Fred loved wildlife. He was known for taking any family or other visitors out on drives to find moose, foxes or any other animals he had recently seen. Fred enjoyed hunting and bought land and a cabin near Rossburn, MB to go elk hunting. He spent many years hunting deer around the family farm.
Despite never having attended high school, Fred was an avid reader and would spend countless hours laying on the couch reading a book. He also enjoyed doing Sudoku puzzles and would be given new Sudoku books for birthdays and Christmases each year.
Fred was known for his love of cards. He would spend hours playing Solitaire by himself and whenever he had an opponent the crib board would be pulled out. It wouldn’t be a visit to Fred’s house without a game of crib and an offer of something to drink. He was never lonely with many neighbours and family members dropping in regularly to visit.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruth; parents, Hugh and May; son Hugh; daughter-in-law Pam Robinson; sisters Phyllis Robinson, Lil Brice and Ursula Lowdon; and brothers Gerald, Jim and John Robinson.
Fred is survived by his son Eddie; two daughters, Wanda Currie [son, Brendan (Nikki)] and Rosalie; grandson Nicholas Robinson; granddaughter Ashley Robinson (Stean Reimer); brother Bill Robinson; sister Dorothy Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Fred will be held at the Tilston Community Hall, Tilston, MB. on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. The interment will follow at the Tilston Cemetery.
Donations in Fred’s name can be made to the Tilston Cemetery Fund at Box 54 Tilston, MB R0M 2B0. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind words, cards, food and flowers.
