EDNA EDWARDS
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edna Edwards, our beloved Wife, Mother, Nana, Great nana, and friend, on May 16, 2025, at the St. Boniface Hospital. We thank God for the 92 years He gave her, and for sharing her with all of us who loved her so deeply. Despite the many good years, her sudden passing while on the way to dinner with loved friends still came as a blow.
Edna will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years Russ Edwards, by her children: Gary Edwards (Judy), Kevin Edwards (Linda), and Margaret Morgan, by her grandchildren: Allison Penner, Nicole Sifuentes (Antonio), Mallory Edwards (Carson), Patrick Edwards (Allison Kendall), and Megan Edwards (Ryan Spindler), by 9 grandchildren: Russell Penner, Raymond Penner, Enna Penner, Elliot Quade, Tonio Sifuentes, Bronwyn Edwards, Georgia Edwards, Chanan Edwards, Quinn Spindler, and by many good friends of all ages. Edna was predeceased by her sisters Susan Dyck, Irene Trann and Carol Gorai, by her brother Cliff Weibe, her grandson Tyler Edwards, and her son-in-law Nigel Morgan.
Born August 10, 1931, to Jake and Margaret Wiebe, second in a family of 5 siblings, Edna grew up on a farm near Homewood, Manitoba. Her early life was certainly not typical for the times or the rural location. Her family traveled from Mexico into the US and Canada, as Jake followed the harvest season hiring his crew’s services out. Back home, he was an inventor and a tinkerer, and as such, Edna’s early rural life atypically included things like wind-driven electricity and home-made motorized scooters to help get the kids to school.
At the age of 18 she left the farm and moved into residence at the Brandon Hospital for Mental Diseases to take up Psychiatric Nursing. The beautiful residence is now an historic building, and is used by the Assiniboine Community College, specifically including the newly named Russ Edwards School of Agriculture.
Edna was able to buy a small house in St. Boniface, and raise her three children there, largely on her own, while working as a nurse. Through a nursing friend, she met Russ and they soon married. Russ adopted her three children, becoming for them the true father they needed. She later went back to school to upgrade to become an RN, and then used her continuing nursing income to support the family when Russ set out to establish his own business manufacturing culverts.
Once the fledgling business became profitable (immediately!), Edna retired from nursing. This early retirement and the business success that came allowed them to start spending portions of the winter in Arizona. There they made new friends, both American and Canadian, and hosted a great number of friends and family from back home.
Not surprisingly given her early life, Edna was known for her strong work ethic. More importantly, she demonstrated an open hospitality and an appetite for socialization and travel. She increasingly grew to love watching sports such as hockey and golf, but her favorite became baseball and their beloved Jays. In Arizona she took up actually playing golf, which she enjoyed for many years, even being rewarded with an official ‘hole in one’. She was a supportive mother-in-law and ‘Nana’ as well as mother; family meant so much to her. But she also had time, energy, and love for many good friends, interested in and proud of their families too. She was always on the go; even as the years mounted, her zest for life and energy for loved ones seemed to stay strong.
A Celebration of Life Service for Edna will be held Saturday June 14, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Boulevard, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Edna’s name may do so to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
