STU NIXON

It is with profound heartbreak and sorrow that the family of Stuart Ronald Nixon announce his sudden passing on May 18, 2025, at St. Boniface Hospital. Stu was surrounded by his loving family as he left us to be with his heavenly Father.

Stu was born on September 30, 1962, in Redvers, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his loving wife Connie, daughters Marina (Dean) Ferley and Erica Nixon (Graeme Wilson), grandchildren Cole and Jade Ferley, brother Kevin (Dawn) Nixon and sister Doreen (Ralph) Oswald and (Carol) Nixon-Pauls. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Molly Nixon and his brother, John Nixon Jr. He is sorely missed by many other family members and friends.

Stu's love for his family was unmatched. He was our rock to lean on and a cherished Papoo to his two grandchildren. Stu also cared deeply for his many friends and often expressed his true gratitude to all.

Stu was a strong coach, educator and mentor to his students. He provided strength, support and guidance to hundreds of students and players on and off the field throughout his career. He loved fiercely and lived boldly. His positive outlook on life was contagious and he worked tirelessly to support those around him. He had a huge impact on everyone's lives and provided amazing memories that will be treasured forever. A soul like Stu's comes around once in a lifetime, and the world is a better place because of the impression he made on everyone.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all who loved and supported Stu throughout his lifetime and to everyone who has provided support to our family during this very difficult time. We would also like to express a special thank you to the St. Boniface Hospital staff who compassionately cared for Stu.

The funeral service for Stu will be held at Oasis Church, 940 Elmhurst Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba on Thursday, June 5 at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. A live stream and recording of the service will be available at: bit.ly/snfuneral. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Stu Nixon Memorial Fund. Donations may be made in his memory at: bit.ly/snfund.

So, you will have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. John 16:22

  • Connie, Marina, Erica, Kevin and Family: I first met Stu as a rookie offensive lineman with the Manitoba Bisons in 1983. Stu was a veteran defensive lineman who treated me with kindness, respect and class. As I was from Thunder Bay, he made sure to feel I was welcome to Winnipeg and included in all team events. As we both dealt with knee injuries that season, Stu took me under his wing, often driving me to appointments. Through his hard work, dedication, determination, and encouragement, he showed me how to overcome adversity and remain positive. I will never forget how he treated me as an equal and welcomed me both to Winnipeg and the Bisons. Rest in Peace Stu. Kevin Campbell - Posted by: Kevin Campbell (Bison Teammate) on: Jun 06, 2025

  • Connie and family. On behalf of my family to yours let me express our sincere condolences. Stu was a great teammate and friend. His contribution to his students and athletes is nothing short of extraordinary. #62. You will be missed. - Posted by: Fred Lyseyko (Teammate) on: Jun 04, 2025

  • I am very saddened to hear of Stu's passing and my condolences go out to the Nixon family. I first met Stu when I played with Kevin on the Winnipeg Hawkeye's. Stu along with the rest of the Nixon clan were always there cheering the team on. It was inevitable that Stu would join Kevin once he became of age to play Junior. Stu finally came to camp and I can definitely say Stu was more talkative. Stu left camp for a few days to go to U of M Bison's camp. He said he would be back but when did return he was only sitting in the stands with the rest of the Nixon clan...he made the Bison's. Looks like he took the right path and along the way touched many live's. Thank you Stu - Posted by: Wayne Smith (Friend) on: Jun 03, 2025

  • To Connie and entire Nixon family, Passing on condolences to the family, so saddened to hear of Stu's sudden passing. Had the pleasure to call Stu a friend and teammate with the Bisons FB team, he was a great teammate and friend and met the first day of training camp and ended up being in Phys. Ed together. Missed those days hanging out at his home where his parents treated me and everyone as family, even though they joked a St. James boy hanging out with a N.E boy. Rest in peace my friend and see you on the gridiron when we meet again Tom & Lisa Hrechkosy - Posted by: Tom Hrechkosy (Former Bison Teammate and Friend) on: Jun 02, 2025

  • My condolences to the entire Nixon family on hearing of Stu's passing. He coached my youngest, Shawn during high school football. He had an infectious smile every time you saw him. May he rest in peace after a job very well done on earth. - Posted by: Marlene Loewen (Haimes) (old friend) on: May 28, 2025

  • My my most heartfelt condolences as you prepare to celebrate this incredible life and navigate this great loss. Stu's love for family was huge. He was always sharing beautiful stories at the Board office about all of you. I have a favorite poem about a Father's love that Id like to share with you. May it bring you a bit of comfort. A Father's Love Endures by M.E. Miro I have seen strength, like an oak in the storm... I have felt gentleness, like a golden summer dawn... I have heard laughter, like a splashing waterfall... I have felt protection, like a shelter all around... All from a life that gave me life... All from my father's love. • Dear Connie and family: My deepest condolences on Stu’s passing. I had the good fortune to be Stu’s teammate at U of M for four years. He was a first class competitor and a pleasure to be around. Stu’s sense of humour and his good nature were his trademark. He was a great teammate and friend. He will be missed. Brad Johnstone - Posted by: Brad johnstone (Friend/teammate) on: May 27, 2025

  • So saddened and shocked to learn of Stu's passing. Stu, Kevin and I were team mates on the Wpg Hawkeyes and the Manitoba Bison's together. Stu always had a smile on his face and was an extremely hard working player. I will remember Stu for his "Stu-isms" that brought joy and laughter to all of his team mates. He truly was a great person, coach and player, you will be missed by many but never forgotten. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Glen Kudar (Friend) on: May 26, 2025
