Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBRUCE EBEN YOUNG
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Bruce Young.
Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Eben and Edith (Swain); brothers, Bryan and Randy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jimmy and Ethel Houston.
Lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Judy (nee Houston); son Gregory (Jennifer), daughter Nancy Helgason (Mark); grandchildren, Spencer and Jacinda Young, Hannah and Dylan Helgason; sisters-in-law, Kathy Young, Linda Walker, Marnie Houston (Ron Cripps), Colleen Houston (Kirk Donald) and their families.
Born and raised in Ontario, Bruce joined the Canadian Air Force when he was 18 years old. While stationed in Comox, BC, he met Judy. They quickly fell in love and got married on August 30, 1968. They welcomed their son Gregory in 1972.
Bruce’s military career brought many promotions and relocations. First, they moved to Holberg, BC in 1972. Then to Portage La Prairie, MB in 1974 where their daughter Nancy was born later that year. Subsequent postings took the family to Ontario; Petawawa in 1978, Gloucester in 1980 and Ottawa in 1983.
In order to bring Judy back to her hometown, they moved to Winnipeg, MB in 1985 and made this their final posting. They planted roots which started with proudly buying their first home.
Bruce honorably served his country in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, including a significant 6-month deployment in the Middle East, retiring as a Master Warrant Officer in 1990.
Following his military service, Bruce then embarked on a second career in health care, working as Director of Material Management at Seven Oaks Hospital and then Riverview Hospital. He retired in 2003 and kept busy until Judy joined him in retirement four years later.
Bruce and Judy once owned a summer cottage in Gimli where they turned the two-bedroom home into a weekend get-away that could comfortably sleep the whole family. After a couple of summers, they decided to sell the property and put in a pool at their home instead. This way the kids and grandkids still had somewhere to come and play. We enjoyed so many fun BBQs and pool parties.
As a young man, Bruce taught himself to play guitar and would play and sing for friends. He took up fishing for a few years but his real enthusiasm was golf, an avid golfer always working on his game.
Bruce loved to read, often having more than one science fiction book on the go at a time. He also liked playing cards and for many years Bruce and Judy started every day with coffee and a game of crib. Bruce was a lot of fun and enjoyed spending time with friends. Visiting dear friends in Texas led to Bruce and Judy buying their own mobile home, where they spent many winters. Bruce always appreciated a cold beer or a glass of red wine with a good steak dinner.
Bruce loved his family so much. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and an attentive grandpa. He had a quiet strength, a calming presence and a charitable heart. He was a constant source of kindness and wisdom and was always grateful for life’s blessings.
A Celebration of Bruce’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 06, 2025, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A private family interment will take place at Glen Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
