I was away when Catherine died and only recently learned of her passing and of her memorial service, which occurred just as I was returning to Winnipeg. I am so sorry to have missed the memorial. My sister, Jeanie, also faced multiple ability challenges and, along with Catherine was part of the Saturday-morning, "J. B. Mitchell Program" in Winnipeg, which from 1970 to 1972 was Manitoba's first community-based program for children and youth with multiple handicaps. Catherine's mom, Nicola, joined up with my mother, Alice, who started the program. I was one of the regular helpers. Deepest Condolences to Nicola and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Russ Rothney (long-time friend) on: Oct 31, 2025

I met Catherine as a young swimming instructor at the Y. I remember being astounded by her inscrutability, but I had the feeling she was enjoying herself, and was ready for whatever adventure was imminent. Later on I met Benj, and learned of the kindness, love and nurturing compassion of the Schaefer family. Best wishes to all of you, and I always hold those as the most memorable swimming lessons. Our sincere condolences to Catherine's family and friends. Catherine was an inspiration to my daughter and I and she lead the way to living life in community. The choices Catherine, her mother and members of her family made have impacted and advanced the inherent rights of all citizens but especially the varying needs of our loved ones with disabilities. Thank you. - Posted by: Laura and Karen Schnellert (acquaintances within the community living associations) on: May 31, 2025
