LEONARD FRED SAWCHUK

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Leonard Fred Sawchuk at the age of 79 on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
Leonard will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lori of 54 years; sons Gerald, Terry, and Jonathan; grandchildren Meka, Hannah and Charlie; brothers Wesley (Mary) and Ed (Wanda); sisters Christina (Mel) and Rose (Ken); sisters-in-law Eileen Sawchuk and Pat (Elmer) Place. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents Emil and Helen Sawchuk; parents-in-law Bill and Ivy Malanchuk; sister Adeline Sawchuk and brothers David and Hillard Sawchuk.
Leonard was born September 12, 1945 in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. He graduated from Gilbert Plains Collegiate, attended Teachers College in Brandon, received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba. He taught school in Comrie, and Birtle, Manitoba and continued his teaching career in Winnipeg in the Fort Garry School Division. Unfortunately, Leonard’s passion for teaching ended abruptly as he was forced into early retirement due to health issues. Leonard endured significant challenges all through his life but despite his heath struggles, he never complained and remained incredibly resilient throughout.
In 1970, Leonard married the love of his life Loretta Malanchuk. They resided in Winnipeg until day of his passing. They enjoyed many trips to Vancouver including Nova Scotia, Las Vegas, and Arizona. Leonard had a true passion for dancing and that was one of the many activities he enjoyed with Lori.
Leonard was very proud of his grandchildren. They always brought great joy and smiles when they visited. The grand kids would say “GiGi, all the muscles in your face are working.” He truly enjoyed doing lots of activities during their visits and sleepovers.
The family wishes to thank the staff at N1, North at the Concordia Hospital for the great care he received. Thanks also to Dr. Thomas, Dr. Minuk and Dr. Fascial for their care. Leonard earned respect from all who knew him. He had a great sense of humor and always knew how to make people laugh. He will be remembered as a kind, good natured, gentle, understanding and generous husband, father, grandfather and friend. A special thank you to Father Bohdan Lukie for his personal visits and for officiating the funeral service.
As per Leonard’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will occur.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Leonard may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation at 1160-675 McDermott Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
