Date of Passing: May 26, 2025
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM (BILL) SUTHERLAND
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Bill's sudden passing on May 26, 2025.
Left behind to cherish memories of their 45 wonderful years together is his loving wife, Bretta. Bill will be forever remembered by his daughter, Dayna (Brett), and the joys of his life - his grandchildren, Nora and Blake. He will also be deeply missed by his sisters-in-law, Rose (David) and Joanne (Alan), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Eileen, and beloved brothers, Alan and David.
Bill grew up in the Norwood area of Winnipeg. In 1955, Jack and Eileen built their family cottage at Hillside Beach, creating an amazing childhood for their three boys. Bill attended Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, where he formed many lifelong friendships.
Bill’s career began at Heymann’s Masonry, and in 1985, he branched out to begin Bill Sutherland Contract Masonry, leaving a lasting legacy in his craft.
Bill was a jack of all trades with many interests. His passion for cars - watching racing, restoring, and collecting - was undeniable. A 1968 Dodge Dart was the first of his collection, and over the years, many vehicles passed through the Sutherland household. He found joy in family vacations to Mexico, cheering on his favourite sports teams, and spending precious moments with his grandchildren.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.
The family wishes to thank the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service along with the staff of St. Boniface Hospital.

I grew up 2 doors away from the Sutherland clan, on a one block street, full of postwar kids. It was a magical childhood, made more so by all the adventures had at the Sutherlands, be it on DuPont St. or Hillside Beach. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but sometimes it just takes one very generous family. I was very lucky they took me under their wings. I was fortunate to spend a few hours with Bill, Bretta and their family at Dave’s celebration. It had been many years, but we just picked up where we had left off. It was wonderful to see them. I really miss Bill and the rest of the family. It’s hard to believe they’re not with us physically anymore, but they will remain in my heart forever. My condolences, Bretta and family. May we all meet up again. Bob Vigerut - Posted by: Bob Vigerut (Childhood friend and neighbour) on: Jun 30, 2025

Sending my condolences to you, Bretta and your family. I wish I had seen this earlier as I would have been at the celebration of life. It’s been a few years since we were in touch but over the many years I knew him Bill was a good and caring friend. Take care. - Posted by: Nancy Spevack (Conway) (Friend) on: Jun 24, 2025

My condolences to Bretta and Family. I am very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Bill worked with me on many of my projects where his professionalism and knowledge of masonry was evident on all of the homes we worked on. He will be missed by all of his clients and the Winnipeg building industry. - Posted by: Grant Sakiyama (Work Associate and Friend) on: Jun 19, 2025

Bill was my neighbor for the last 25 years. We would often strike up a conversation when we crossed paths. I liked to tease him by telling him that he went through trucks like a woman goes through shoes! Bretta, Tammy and I are holding you in our hearts and if you need anything, just ask. Bill will be missed but he will also be remembered. - Posted by: Doug & Tammy Johnson (Neighbors) on: Jun 11, 2025

My deepest condolences to Bretta and her family on Bill's passing. I attended school with both Bill's and Bretta. I would like to share a quote with Bill's family. Bill has not died, but gone away, to a better place free of pain and suffering. We will see him again some day. Rest in Peace Bill. You are loved and will be missed. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (School acquaintance) on: Jun 07, 2025
