CINDY LOUISE NEWFIELD

March 31, 1957 - July 3, 2025

Cindy Louise Newfield (née Starkell) passed away at the age of 68 on July 3, 2025, at her home in North Saanich, British Columbia surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, her children, Jillian, Daniel (Megan) and Kirstin (Andrew) and her grandsons, Leif, Forrest and Arlen. She was predeceased by her parents, Ray and Florence and her sister Cathie.

Cindy grew up in Elmwood. From an early age, she was hard-working and nurturing, whether it be working in the family grocery store or helping to raise younger siblings as the second-oldest of six kids. As a teenager, she packed up her younger brother and sister and drove them from Winnipeg to California with just a few dollars in her pocket, determined to give them an adventure none of them would forget.

She later attended the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba and shortly after graduating, Cindy met Bob while working at a veterinary clinic. They would spend the next 41 years together and built McLeod Veterinary Hospital from the ground up. Cindy brought vision and business acumen, while Bob dedicated himself to veterinary medicine and compassionate care. She boldly pursued growth and innovation while ensuring the practice remained true to its values and principles, building a thriving, supportive workplace that employed and empowered so many wonderful people.

Even though Cindy was happiest in her own backyard, she did travel far and wide. She abseiled into a 10-storey deep underground stream on a three month cycling trip around New Zealand (one of many cycling trips throughout her life), travelled to New York to support the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and attend the afterparty at the Russian Tea Room with her friends, Charley and Janet, and visited Haida Gwaii for Bob’s 70th birthday.

And yet, what she cherished most was waking up early for breakfast over newspapers (cinnamon raisin toast, biscuits, or making pancakes for her grandkids), long walks with her dogs at Birds Hill Park and Horth Hill Park, listening to CBC radio, and the gentle grip of her grandchildren’s hands. She loved the New Music Festival, Fringe Festival, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and attending music and art shows of all kinds.

Cindy poured her heart into everything she did - raising kids, nurturing grandkids, volunteering, attending hockey games, coaching soccer and conjuring up a comforting meal at a moment’s notice. She endured countless hours of off-key notes as she sat next to each of her kids as they practiced their musical instruments. She was the type to knit a sweater for weeks and months, undo it completely, and start over, just to get the collar right. Cindy was always available for the people she loved and unapologetically herself. She was strong in her convictions but was never too proud to learn something new.

With the way you walked through this world, fierce, loving, full of purpose and strong, we thought you would live to 100. But you will live on in the meals we cook, the music we enjoy and the courage we carry.
