Born in Newry, Northern Ireland, and raised in New Docks, Galway, Mary attended boarding school at the Loretto Convent in Balbriggan, north of Dublin. She studied medicine at University College Dublin for four years, then two years of dentistry at Trinity College Dublin, earning her Doctor of Dentistry in 1947. She worked in post-war London at Eastman Dental Clinic, where she met her husband, Dr. Richard Nash. They immigrated to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in the 1950s.
Mary was the center of her household, raising five children with enthusiasm, warmth, and resilience. She taught her family the importance of hard work, compassion, and respect for education. Her kitchen was the heart of family activities.
As life slowed down, Mary became a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren, dedicating time to each of them - full of questions - and consistently offering advice and encouragement.
She endured with faith the loss of her daughter Eileen, husband, parents and siblings, Bernadette, Edward, and Tom with quiet dignity.
Through joy and sorrow, she lived a life of grace, purpose, and unshakable resolve - always "getting on with it".

As a friend of Diarmuid from St. Paul’s, I remember visiting the Nash home many times. Often it was before going out for the evening. Mrs. Nash invited us in, to sit in the kitchen while waiting for Diarmuid. She had an ulterior motive. During the wait we were invariably cross examined; Mrs. Nash drilled for information about our plans. Where, who, what etc, she wanted all the details. We did our best to answer, and withhold information at the same time, but often unsuccessfully. Mrs. Nash was a favourite of our group of friends. I remember her fondly. Indeed whenever we happened to meet her in the following years we experienced happy and friendly conversations, receiving her opinions and comments with the same friendly spirit in which she gave them. We will always remember your dear mother Mary as she was an inspiration to all of us. She was the clasp who kept everyone together on her string of beautiful pearls throughout her life. We will treasure her words of wisdom and always keep her in our hearts. May God hold her in the palm of His hand. We know she will be watching over us from heaven above. Sfx: knock knock. Screen door opening..... "Elsie? Are you there?" This was a familiar refrain at 699 Queenston Street for as long as I can remember. Mrs Nash would drop by to borrow something, offer her take on world events or dispense some advice....often to me. My mom thought she'd won the lottery having Mary Nash as her neighbour. She was a reliable friend and a force to be reckoned with! I found the 8pm summer bed time she imposed on her daughters - my friends - completely annoying but I wasn't about to challenge her parenting! I have a very special picture of our family at my mom's funeral many years ago and in the centre of that picture is Mrs Nash. She was an extraordinary woman. Condolences to the entire Nash family. Your mom will be missed. Debbie Gordon - Posted by: Debbie Gordon (Friend & Neighbour) on: Jul 14, 2025

Very sad to hear this. What a fine person Mary was. I have many menories of her in the Langan house and at mass at SJB. Such warmth and vitality, she seemed ageless. And she always took an interest in us kids. We will remember her very fondly as part of our childhood. - Posted by: Rob Langan (Family friend) on: Jul 13, 2025
