WILLIAM (WASYL, BILL, WILLY) ZAHYNACZ

January 14, 1946 – June 5, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Zahynacz at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary at the age of 79.

Born to Ukrainian nationals Wasyl and Stephania Zahynacz in Augsburg, Germany, Willy and his family immigrated to Canada in 1949, eventually settling in Winnipeg, where he grew up attending schools in the North End and Fort Rouge, graduating from Grant Park High School in 1964. He earned a degree in geophysics from the University of Manitoba and began a long career in oil and gas exploration.

In 1968 Willy married Margaret Webb and moved to Calgary, where they raised four children and built a home in Redwood Meadows. Willy was a gentle, resilient and intelligent man who loved fishing, skiing, playing cards and spending lakeside summers with family at Pine Lake, Alberta, Gimli (Rusalka), Manitoba and Longpine Lake (Ingolf), Ontario. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength and deep love.

Willy is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Margaret and his brother Jerry (Nadia). He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Sonya and Katharine (Mathhias); sons, Billy and Danny (Ashleigh): grandchildren Freddy, Macara, Naio, Arvin, River and Desta; brother, Igor (Joan) and many family and friends.

An interment and celebration of Willy's life will take place at St. James Cemetery (525 Tylehurst St., Winnipeg) on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Bill and his family lived across the street from my family. We always spoke but never travelled in the same crowd. He was very studious, not me. Yes he was kind, thoughtful and courteous. The day of my wedding, Bill joined me for lunch at my parents kitchen table, eating my favourite soup. I can still see him. He also attended the wedding. Everyone moved on, and lost contact. But when I return to visit friends on Hector Bay I wonder where he settled. Unfortunately I am away the day of the celebration of a very kind man, but my heart and thoughts will be with you. - Posted by: Trucia Howard (Friend and hector bay neighbour) on: Jul 19, 2025
