Peacefully and surrounded by family, Linda died on July 17, 2025. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Michael, her two sons and their families: Tim (Stefanie), Blake, and Shea in Ottawa; and Chris (Kelly), Ella, and Chase in Winnipeg. Leach, and her brothers: Gus; Gil; and Norman.
Linda was a Lifer at Balmoral Hall School in Winnipeg. Upon graduation, she spent a glorious year studying in Florence, Italy at the Villa Mercede. Linda continued her studies at the University of Manitoba where she obtained her BA and then in Washington DC for her AMI certification – Association Montessori Internationale.
Linda taught Montessori preschool students at Winnipeg Montessori School (in St. Luke's Church) and at Children's House. She also taught Carl Orff music. In 1984, Linda created the Alumnae Department at Balmoral Hall School, built their first digital database, and organized many reunions for BH Alums. Upon her retirement, she was presented with the distinction "Alumnae Director Emeritus". Linda then joined the Board at St. John's-Ravenscourt School, eventually becoming the first woman to serve as Chair. At the end of her tenure, she received the "Distinguished Service Award" from the SJR Board. In 1994, Linda joined a group of volunteers who worked tirelessly for five years to organize the Pan American Games 1999 in Winnipeg. In recognition of her voluntarism, Linda received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022).

I'm so sorry to learn late of Linda's passing. Michael, Tim, Chris and families, my sincere condolences and gratitude for your tender loving care of this blythe spirit. Linda had intelligence, resilience and a capacity for joy that taught me so much over the years. We could talk family, gardening, music, the Lake and politics with ease. Linda had a way of including everyone in the room with true interest and generosity. I have passed the Christmas rubber chicken White Elephant prize to friends in Virden who are continuing the tradition. Linda, we will continue to gather around the piano, good food and the lake to celebrate the things you loved so well. Much love, Heather (Nancy, Leigh and Meg too!) - Posted by: Heather Cullen (Cousin) on: Sep 11, 2025

Dear Mike, We were so very saddened to hear of Linda’s passing. I still smile when I think of the sing-a-long with Derek after his accident. Linda’s warmth and kindness was limitless. Derek immediately recognized pictures of you and Linda and was visibly saddened when I explained what had happened. Our Condolences to you, your sons and their families. I'm writing this at just after noon on Wednesday July 23, after having received, via email from a Winnipeg friend, the news of Linda. I first met Linda in the early 1970s, when she worked as one of the Montessori teachers at Children's House. Linda was a Children's House colleague and close friend of the woman I later lived with and then married, Rosemary Darville, then Rosemary Foort (surname of her first husband). I had thought of Linda and Mike just this morning, and was planning on emailing and then phoning today. As I came to realize, Linda and Mike had such a wonderful, deep, mutually supportive marriage. I visited with both of them in their Winnipeg home in 2023 and 2024, and, as always, they were welcoming, warm, witty and also serious, and those were, for me, great visits. Linda was one of the first people to phone me when she received the news from me, via a group email, of Rosemary's passing on, in late March of 2023. Linda and Rose had a decades-long friendship, deep and, of course, with lots of laughter. I'm quite aware of the chronic health challenges Linda dealt with over many years, and with so much assistance and support from Mike. As others here have said and know, Linda was an amazingly capable and focused person, and whether she was dealing realistically and with determination with her own health situation or providing support and counsel and friendship to others, she was One of a kind. I can only send positive thoughts and energy across the distance from Vancouver Island to Winnipeg, and Ottawa, for Mike and for Linda and Mike's sons and families. Much love-- ---Harry - Posted by: Harry Berbrayer (friend) on: Jul 23, 2025

Linda and I worked together as Montessori teachers at Children’s House in the 1970’s. As well, Linda brought her joyful love of music to the program as an Orr music teacher. Our circle times were filled with Linda banging out a raucous rendition of the Pink Panther and all the children and me slithering along the floor mimicking big cats. We sang and danced and had so much fun! I like to believe we gave the children in our care a wonderful opportunity to experience the richness of that unique learning environment and Linda’s contribution cannot be underestimated. - Posted by: Mimi Mirus (Friend and co-teacher at Children’s House) on: Jul 22, 2025

I was at BH for a few years while Linda was there. I was a a boarder, a year ahead and in a different House, so our paths didn't cross often, however, I remember Linda with a smile. She was always fun! I remember one of her birthday parties; one of the best parties of my childhood and one that I've told my children about. It was an ice-cream and dance party. Not being too impressed with the idea of dance lessons I was won over by the promise of ice-cream. I'll never forget the long table full of bins of ice-cream and bowls of every possible topping! The possibilities were endless and I piled my bowl so high I expected someone would reprimand me, but Linda came up, grinned at me and said, "You need more whipped cream," and laughed. I remember that even the dance lessons were fun and full of laughter. Definitely the best birthday party ever! Linda brought kindness, generosity, fun, and laughter with her! - Posted by: Sue Evans (school mate) on: Jul 22, 2025

Mike, Tim, Chris, Sometimes we're lucky enough to know someone who is gracious, generous, witty and blessed with a desire to make the world a better place. That was Linda. I'm grateful for her counsel, the shared wisdom and laughter. Whether it was performance as a California Raisin, the Tin Man or as the piano maestro for parties and carol services, she made the world a better place. So terribly sorry to hear of Linda’s death. She was a year ahead of me at BH and a girl that everyone looked up to. What I remember most about Linda was her incredible sense of humour. The last time I saw her was at the BH reunion in the ‘80s. A number of us from 63 and 63 (11) were sitting in a stairwell at our hotel and Linda had us all in stitches. Rest well Linda. You were one of a kind. - Posted by: Susan Foster (Friend) on: Jul 21, 2025

Dear Mike, Tim and Chris. Scarcely days after our family arrived in Winnipeg in 1991 to begin our time at St. John's~Ravenscourt School, Linda scooped us up and made us feel part of Winnipeg, the school and her family. We were shown famous Winnipeg landmarks, given the inside scoop on most things, invited to spend time at their home and at the cottage on Lake of the Woods. Linda and Mike knew the importance of welcoming newcomers to their city and for the next eleven years we felt part of the Radcliffe family. Parties in the Octagon, the annual oyster party and singing around any piano (that happened to be nearby) are lifelong memories for our family. While famous for her gregarious nature, as SJR Board Chair, Linda led with a fierce commitment to integrity, process, good governance and the development of policy that was mission driven, clear and gave direction to both the Board and the Head of School. Linda was a driving force behind the growth of Fine and Performing Arts at SJR. Her years on the Board made an extraordinary and lasting difference to the School. You were a great lady, Linda. The McGuigan family will miss you. Your laughter, love and legacy lingers in our hearts. Mitch, Mary, Christopher and Heather McGuigan - Posted by: Mitch and Mary McGuigan (Friends) on: Jul 21, 2025

Linda was also a pioneer in combining Orff music education with Montessori in a preschool setting when she worked at Children’s House in the mid-1970’s. This was before Orff teacher training was available here, and to my knowledge, before it was being used with children that young. When she resigned in order to start her family she kindly left her Orff instruments to the school. I was the lucky beneficiary of those instruments, and she was my inspiration. Mike, Tim and Chris and family - I’m so sorry for your profound loss and I send you all my heartfelt sympathy. - Posted by: dorothy kotler (former children’s house staff) on: Jul 19, 2025

Dear Mike and family, I am so sorry to learn of Linda’s passing. Our deepest Condolences. One word describes her: spectacular. Linda was such a joy to work with, always positive and dedicated and focused on getting the job done but making sure that everyone was recognized and appreciated. She would appear at events and circulate, knowing everyone, but she would eventually hone in on the people who were by themselves. She took it upon herself to ensure they were made to feel welcome. She was a grande dame of a different generation. She will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Robbie Gabor. - Posted by: Robert Gabor (Friend) on: Jul 19, 2025

Linda had so many talents but the main one was making life long friends. She was always interested in what you were doing, what you thought about an issue, your family, what you were reading, what word games you were playing! She was a person who made a difference, a real force! Our Condolences to her family and friends. Ken and Lynn Cooper and family. - Posted by: Lynn Cooper (Friend) on: Jul 19, 2025

Linda had many talents, one being playing the piano. I recall her playing, and singing, at the Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. She was a force to be reckoned with. Always fun and enthusiastic, Linda left an impression and good one at that. Mike, to you and your kids, so sorry for this loss. - Posted by: Paul Sweatman (Friend) on: Jul 19, 2025
