ALEXANDER BODNARUK

Alexander Michael Bodnaruk passed away suddenly July 10, 2025.

Alex was a devoted and caring husband to Helen. They were married for 64 years and their life together was truly a love story. Her death in 2024 was heart-breaking for him and he lost his zest for life after her passing. When Mom spent two years in a personal care home, Dad would travel 15kms everyday (by bicycle in summer) and would stay the entire day with her.

Dad was a loving father to his daughters, Cheryl (Al) and Brenda and cherished grandfather to Amanda (Paul), Raymond, Madison (Keanna) and Kristin (Kurt) and great-grandfather to Myla, Aurora, Adaline, Myles and Bennett. His family was his pride and joy and cherished spending time with them.

Dad was born September 26, 1935, and raised in the North End of Winnipeg, where he met Mom. His heart was truly in the ‘North End’. He visited this area numerous times especially this year, both by bicycle and walking extensively, reminiscing through areas he lived and frequented while he was a boy and after when he met Mom.

Health was always a priority for Dad. He worked out every day up until the last couple of years. Running, roller blading, biking and weight machines were part of his repertoire through his adult years. Clean and healthy eating was important throughout his life. He instilled a health conscious attitude in his children and grandchildren.

Dad worked at Olivetti servicing typewriters for 25 years and as a school bus driver for a short time. In retirement, he loved garage sales and buying items that he would fix and re-sell. He was very mechanically inclined and could fix anything. Nothing made him happier than selling these items for a few bucks more than he paid for them.

Dad was a private man who enjoyed reading, watching TV and listening to records from his generation. He was smart as a whip and loved discussing current news, Blue Bomber and Jets games, with family members.

A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Dad’s life. He will be deeply missed and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Have know Al since 1966 when I bought the house next door. Watched the girls grow up and we spent a lot of time together over the years. Many parties and too many hangovers. Garage sales buying crap we didn’t need and a lot of laughing and acting silly. Helen was my best friend and we shared all our innermost secrets. When Helen started to decline Al took over her care, never complaining and always there for her. He was totally devoted to her care. Not an easy job being a caretaker but he persevered right to the end. We were so proud to call him a friend. Condolences to the family he was so proud of.He is with Helen again where he wanted to be.hugs to you all. - Posted by: Tom and Doreen Bray (Neighbour and friends) on: Aug 05, 2025

  • This hole in my heart is growing, but my wonderful memories live on. One memory that comes to mind is when uncle Al taught me how to ice skate when I was around 6 or 7 and every time I fell he would fall and make me laugh just to stop me from crying! Uncle Al Always called me “Shawnzee” right to his last day and NOBODY was allowed to call me that. Shawnzee loves you uncle Al and will miss you you & aunt Helen till my last breath 😢😢😢 - Posted by: Shawn Kwitecki (Nephew) on: Jul 26, 2025
