MICHAEL JOHN CELS

November 18, 1963 - July 18, 2025

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Mike Cels, a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, on July 18, 2025, at the age of 61.

Mike died peacefully and naturally at home, following a lengthy illness.

Born on November 18, 1963, in Regina, Mike was a person of immense kindness, generosity, and humour. He touched the lives of many with his warmth, support and mentorship.

Mike was a devoted husband to Carmen for 29 years, and a dedicated father to Cynthia and Jonathan, instilling in them the values of integrity, compassion, and resilience.

Mike enjoyed many pastimes. Whether he was reading about WWII History, looking for ways to spend time on or near the water, travelling near and far, undertaking DIY home-improvement projects, running ten km races, or simply spending time with family, he pursued his interests with enthusiasm.

Mike liked to say that his life's work was commercializing medicine for Canadians. He held senior executive roles in several pharmaceutical companies, most notably GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer, and left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him. His colleagues remember him for his values-driven leadership, and his mentorship and support.

In his final years as he endured the progressive losses that come with an ALS diagnosis, Mike fought back with everything he had. His advocacy efforts raised money and awareness for ALS patients across Canada and earned him the King Charles III Coronation Medal and other awards for his determination to end ALS.

Mike will be deeply missed by his wife, Carmen, his children, Cynthia and Jonathan, and his parents Joe (Sherry) and Charlotte, and his six siblings and their partners and many cherished nieces and nephews.

As we mourn the loss of Mike, we also celebrate the distinguished life he led and the indelible mark he left on all who knew him. His memory will live on in our hearts, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire us. We will always treasure the laughter and joy he brought into our lives.

We thank his devoted caregivers for their excellent care.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation is planned for Monday, August 25, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, August 26, at 1:00. Please feel welcome to share stories and memories at the Celebration of Life reception, immediately following the service. All events will take place at Glen Oaks Memorial Gardens in Oakville, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ALS Society of Canada in his memory.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • You were a very kind person during our high school years and were an accomplished basketball and volleyball player. I wish to extend my condolences to you and your family. - Posted by: Bentley Livingstone (Friend) on: Aug 13, 2025

  • Mike and I shared a lot of laughs in our younger years, which I will always remember. We were roommates for a stint and he was the best man at my wedding. I wish that things had not been so challenging for Mike over the last many years. He was a real trouper, coming to Winnipeg to visit with me and a bunch of his friends. Rest in peace my friend. My condolences to Carmen, Jonathan and Cynthia. - Posted by: Bob Laird (Friend) on: Aug 04, 2025
