MRS. MARILYN (JEAN) MCCORMACK

(née HAYNES)

An extraordinary woman and true trailblazer, Jean passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2025.

Born on August 14, 1935, in Saskatchewan and raised in British Columbia, Jean graduated as a Registered Nurse from Vancouver General Hospital in 1958. Her life was marked by curiosity, creativity, and compassion. She was a head nurse, high school teacher, costume designer, artist, and gardener - but above all, a devoted wife, proud mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend.

In 1964, Jean moved to Winnipeg, where she worked for many years at Grace Hospital and later at the Victoria Hospital. In the early 1990s, she transitioned from nursing to education, creating an innovative and widely respected Health and Childcare program at Miles Macdonell Collegiate. She also led the school's costume department for theatre productions until her retirement in 2000.

Jean is lovingly remembered by her son Peter (Ruby); grandsons, Seth, Tiernan, and Quinten; her niece and dear friend Melanie; extended family in British Columbia; and many cherished friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert McCormack, in 2005.

As per Jean's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. We invite those who knew her to honour her memory in their own way - by remembering her infectious laughter, her endless creativity, and her zest for life. She will remain with us all in spirit.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Today would have been my dear friend's 90th birthday. Jean's gift was to truly listen and make someone feel deeply understood. Her energy was light and full of hope. She once shared the motto of her life was "I feel joyful and useful and loved." In 2017 when I last traveled to White Rock, BC to visit with Jean, she was still verbal and keen to encourage fellow residents. She would gently put a hand on their arm, look into their eyes and the current of love she shared was palpable. She lived a long life by being committed to being of service, sharing her joy. Over countless, long phone conversations between her in Winnipeg and me in the U.S., we shared about the stories of our lives, what we had come to understand about life and death and the backing we enjoyed from the spiritual universe. Melanie and Peter and grandsons, I feel for your loss knowing Jean's wisdom will continue to guide you. - Posted by: Estelle Minor (Friend through son Brian) on: Aug 14, 2025

  • We grew up with “Auntie Jean” and “Uncle Bob” because of a close friendship with my parents. My brother played with their son and they were often at our home. Auntie Jean guided my parents through my illness with love and incredible tenderness. I can hear her laughter and gentle voice regaling stories and telling jokes. I also have three pieces of her art in my home- she painted both of my children and an incredible scene of fall leaves in water. I’m so sorry to hear she has passed and am hoping she is up there making my parents laugh again. - Posted by: Lisa de Jardin (Close family connection) on: Jul 28, 2025

  • We met by chance through a mutual friend back in 2008 and fell in love with her zest for life. Her laughter, story telling of years gone by, her passion for painting and music was well received. We spent many nights over the next few years taking care of the little things around the house and spending many nights enjoying dinners and her stories of all the adventures she had experienced . We helped her the best we could with her transition into assisted living after the sale of her home and did so until she decided assisted living was not for her anymore and was moved out to BC to be closer to her family and niece Melanie. We still have some of her pictures she painted hanging on our walls and the sliding wood bench in our front yard. Although the communication ended, we still held her dear in our thoughts and prayers. I am glad we met her and don’t regret the time spent with her over those few years. She will be missed. Condolences to all of her friends and family. - Posted by: Kirk Paquette (Friend) on: Jul 26, 2025

  • I am very sorry for your loss. Marilyn was my high school teacher back in the 80's. Marilyn was a good teacher and taught me a lot about Health and Child care. Later on I ended up working in health care. - Posted by: Tracey Sinclair (A past student at Miles Mac) on: Jul 26, 2025
