With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Joan Ostermann, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Joan passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Grace Hospital.
Born in Winnipeg on September 21, 1940, Joan was the daughter of Russel and Annie Thompson and sister to Joyce, all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her brother Fred (Margaret) of Calgary.
Joan married Bill Cox in 1960 and had two children, Marshall and Alison. In 1987, she married Ernie Ostermann, and her family grew into a loving blended home. Joan was a devoted homemaker, always putting family at the center of her life.
She is survived by her husband, Ernie, her children Marshall (Angela), Alison, and step-children Michelle (Frank), Barclay, and Brad (Bethan), and her 11 grandchildren.
Joan’s life was marked by quiet strength, compassion, and dedication to her loved ones. She worked for 34 years at Scotiabank, where she was respected by her peers. In retirement, she remained active through her love of bridge, travel and hosting with Ernie through Friendship Force International.
Joan’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to a charity of your choice.

I am so sorry to learn of Joan’s passing. My deepest condolences to all of her loved ones. Joan was my late mother’s cousin, so sweet and caring, with a wonderful laugh! I have many fond memories of Joan, Bill, and of course, Buttons. Time spent at Auntie Anne, Uncle Russ’s home, trying to avoid Sandy (their ferocious little Chihuahua), opting to play with Buttons, or join Freddie and the family downstairs to listen to Wes Harrison’s sound effects album. Joan was so supportive when my grandparents passed, and I will cherish all the times together. - Posted by: Jane Waters (Cousin (once removed?)) on: Aug 12, 2025

Joan was a highly capable Administrator at our Commercial Banking Centre and Main branch. She was a true professional in every aspect of her work and much respected by those she supervised. She was a major support to me during the years that I managed our Portage and Main operations and a delight to be around. My sincere Condolences to Ernie and all of her family.
