It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Eric Emmanuel Machel, who left us on August 3, 2025, at the age of 82.
Eric was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba on August 31, 1942, to parents Gustav and Augusta Machel. He was the youngest boy surrounded by five sisters -Irene, Mardie, Margie, Norma, Rosie- and later Ellie who came a few years afterward. He attended Lonely Dale School and Whitemouth High School. When he was younger he was often known as “Sonny”, a nickname that carries through to this day by his surviving nieces and nephews. He traveled to many countries throughout his life including Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Russia, Australia, and others. He would work along the way during his travels to be able to see more of the world.
Eric was a man of great adventure and curiosity, having traveled the world before settling down with his beloved wife, Ruth Machel (Rosnow) until her passing in 2021. Together, they built a beautiful family. Eric held various positions with CNR and CPR. He also worked for many years for Winnipeg and Manitoba Housing before his retirement in 2008. After his retirement, Eric and Ruth moved to Transcona to be closer to his grandsons.
Eric is survived by his children Mike (Lina) and Jackie (David). Eric's legacy lives on through his grandsons, Aidan Czul and Greg Czul, who brought immense joy to his life. He was a fun grandpa and would often take the boys out on adventures. He loved to give them the “fireman lift” where he would spin them around until they were both dizzy with laughter. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love for his family, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.
He was a loving and devoted husband to Ruth, standing by her side through every chapter of life. In her final years, his unwavering commitment shone through - taking two buses each day, for several years, just to be with her at her personal care home. His quiet dedication and enduring love were a testament to the strength of their bond and the depth of his character.
Eric was the kindest human being and touched the hearts of anyone he came into contact with. He was also a very funny man, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. He had a knack for connecting with strangers, often learning their life stories while sitting in a waiting room. He always found a way to relate to the person sitting next to him.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment will take place at Glen Lawn Cemetery.
Eric's life was a testament to the power of adventure, love, and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We would like to thank all the staff at Devonshire house, and especially his home care team for their compassionate support the past few years. We are deeply appreciative of all your support.
