DEE DEE BUDGELL-SHORT

In Loving Memory

Our guiding star, Dee Dee, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family and friends. While her fierce grip on life has ended, her extraordinary spirit remains.

Dee Dee was a force - a woman of immense generosity, fierce loyalty, and unwavering dedication. She lived a life that beautifully married virtue with action. Her journey as a relentless community advocate began with her ferocious and loving care for her late husband, Harry, which later blossomed into a public role as a patient advocate for Shared Health and fundraising chair for the Riverview Health Centre.

Professionally, she dedicated many years to Manitoba Public Insurance before retiring. But her true work was in building community, whether through her involvement in politics or by simply hosting friends and neighbours, sharing food, fellowship, and her signature welcome basket of bread, salt, and joy.

She wore her heart on her sleeve and was known for her direct honesty and the playful scolding she’d give to those she loved. Her moral fabric was an unbreakable Gordian knot of principle and compassion. She was a guiding light whose absence will be deeply felt, but whose memory will continue to inspire. We will think of her whenever we see a community united for a cause or witness someone advocating fiercely for others.

Dee Dee’s love lives on through her husband, Ken; her daughter, Kati, and her husband, Allan.

Please join us to honour and celebrate her remarkable life at the United Church in Meadowood (1111 Dakota Street) on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. The service will also be live-streamed at ucim.org.

In lieu of flowers, it was Dee Dee's wish that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I had the privilege of working with Dee Dee many years ago at the claims centre on St. Mary’s Road and again at City Place. Right from the get-go, she was friendly, warm and welcoming. In getting to know her, we discovered that she was best friends with my sister-in-law in St. Vital in their younger years. She had a great laugh when telling me some of their antics as friends when growing up together. That was our first connection. Unknown to me, she also spoke highly of me to my supervisor at the time which was noted in my file on my very first employee review and, it was because of her that I went from being a term employee to a full-time employee at the Pembina location working under Harry’s direction. Kati, your name was mentioned often, and she loved you with a deep and immense passion. I can honestly say that she is one of the nicest and most courageous ladies that I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am extremely saddened to learn of her passing and would like to extend my deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Rest in peace lovely lady, thank you for gracing my life and for your kind heart. You made this planet a much nicer place and I will always remember you with a smile. - Posted by: Melita Bernardin (Co-worker) on: Aug 30, 2025

  • Oh Deedee there are no words to sum up the beautiful lady you were inside and out❤️. You were the very first person I met when I was driving around Tourond Creek looking at houses. Without blinking an eye, you invited me into your home to tell me what a wonderful neighborhood and community it was. From that moment I knew how special you were and now, 5 years later, I’m honoured and humbled to call you my dear friend. You were a bright light, a source of comfort, a source of joy, and so much more to so many of us. We will miss you always our beautiful Deedee. • Dear Ken and Kati, Pierre and I are the parents of Joe Chevrier and the in-laws of Lynne Painchaud. Please accept our most sincere condolences on the passing of your wife and mother. Upon talking with Joe and Lynne, we feel like we had a glimpse into the strength, courage and determination that your wife and mother displayed. She fought a very difficult battle this past year but we understand, always with a positive, upbeat attitude and the determination to never let her hardships get her down. Her obituary was most beautiful …. brought tears to our eyes. Pierre and Pat Chevrier - Posted by: Pierre and Pat Chevrier (Parents of Joe Chevrier and in laws of Lynne Painchaud) on: Aug 16, 2025

  • There are times in life when we meet those who are destined to be our forever friends. They are true friends who are there for you through thick and thin. Your rock when times are tough and your source of fun and laughter when we celebrate the good times. Top it all off with a friend who is super smart with a wonderful sense of humour. Dee Dee was all this and more. I have learned so many life lessons over the years, that I have known Debbie/Dee Dee. Life lessons that will forever enrich my life. Seeing her and Ken treasure life together brought so much joy to my heart. My heart aches for the loss of my beautiful friend but I know that God has much more in store for our Heavenly Angel. My sincere condolences to Ken and Dee Dee’s family and friends. How we love our Dee Dee. Rest in Peace my beautiful friend. - Posted by: Louise Horst (Friend) on: Aug 16, 2025

  • I got to know Dee Dee when we took the same Running Room course back in 2004, and I echo everything said about her in this obituary. She was one of the kindest, strongest people I knew and I've known more than a few and I feel blessed to have had her as a friend. She has been a blessing to all who knew her, and her legacy will live on. Ken, although you don't know me (I had already left Canada when you came into her life) I want you to know that you and Kati have my deepest Condolences. She was a force of nature and will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Caroline Ben-Ari (Friend) on: Aug 16, 2025
