WANDA VALLEE RUTHERFORD
Wanda Vallee Rutherford, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, passed this August at the age of 96.
Born in 1929 on her family's farm in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan, Wanda was the daughter of Juanita and James Raeside. She grew up with four brothers, learning the values of kindness and hard work that she would carry throughout her life.
In 1950, Wanda graduated from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg. She went on to work in a variety of nursing roles, including surgical care. It was through her work as a nurse that she met her husband Allan, when she cared for one of his five sisters during labour and delivery. The two married in 1952 and shared more than 66 years of a wonderful life together.
Wanda and Allan were accomplished square dancers, traveling across Manitoba and into North Dakota to perform - including Wanda's appearances on CBC's Red River Jamboree. Summers were spent on Lake of the Woods, where they sailed, entertained, and created lasting memories with family and friends.
In 1974, Wanda and Allan purchased the Bridge Drive-In (BDI), the iconic Winnipeg ice cream shop that quickly became part of the city's heart. As manager until her retirement at 65, Wanda's warmth and friendliness shaped the BDI into what it is today. She had an extraordinary ability to connect with people - chatting with every customer, remembering names and stories, and making all feel welcome. The BDI became an institution in large part because of the person Wanda was.
Beyond her work, Wanda was an avid traveler, exploring the world from Zimbabwe to Scotland. Everywhere she went, she made friends - people were naturally drawn to her vibrant personality, her curiosity, and her gift for conversation.
Wanda is survived by her children Kathryn (Paul) and Blair (Laura); her grandchildren Jessica (Justin), Chad (Renée), Clara, and Ry (Allegra); and her great-grandchildren Landry, Declan, and Bryson. She is also survived by her brother Barry (Susie), her nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were blessed to know her. She was predeceased by her husband Allan, her parents Juanita and James, and her brothers Vaughn, Morley and Glen.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Carter Senior Care for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Wanda over the past two years. Their compassion and support made them feel like family to her, and for this, we are deeply grateful. A special thank you to Robin, Karna, and Karen for their unwavering dedication and love.
Wanda's legacy is one of love, laughter, and connection. She will be remembered for her kindness, her adventurous spirit, and the joy she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
A celebration of Wanda's life will be held on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Children's Hospital.
